How to change a clutch clip on a 405?

The first answerer has DELETED his worthless answer already!

I went to the website suggested above my answer, and found NOTHING! except the question...%26quot;How to change a clutch clip%26quot;. No helpful advice. No text at all. Am I missing something?

I have a 1989 Peugeot 405, and do ALL my mechanics. There is a clutch cable, a clutch pedal, a clutch lever. Internally (in the clutch housing, removing the gearbox) there is a release bearing, a driven plate, and a heavy clutch spring.

What is a clip? and where is it? The %26quot;TOP CONTRIBUTOR%26quot; in the Peugeot category, who owns a 405, and with years of experience would like to know.

Thanks.How to change a clutch clip on a 405?

How many mile do you need to change your clutch?

hey. i'm wondering how many miles can a clutch usualy last if the car is driven nice and properly?

and also, can anyone tell me if this car is good? does it worth that price?

http://london.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAd?AdId=35How many mile do you need to change your clutch?
i got one that has lasted about 165 thousand miles ,it all depends on how they are treated and how well you keep them adjusted ,the average is about 125 thousand on a good clutch, some times less, depends on who,s driving it,and how hard they treat it,good luck.,its pretty fair car,but not hardly worth the asking price, try to get it lower if possible, good luck .How many mile do you need to change your clutch?
if he wants to sell it he,ll come down a little on price.

The clutch %26amp; throwout bearing will last many many miles / years if you learn to keep your left foot on the floor except while changing gears. This includes sitting at stop lights. How many mile do you need to change your clutch?
It completely depends on your driving habits and skill. How many mile do you need to change your clutch?
These are Nice little cars that hold up well and 100,000 mile out of a clutch is not uncommon. But this Car should be checked over By Your Mechanic....... Because Lowered Springs and Larger Lower Profile tires tells me someone Built them Selves a Street Racer And it may Have Been Beaten..... And it will ride Considerably Harder Also you should make Sure you get any Paper work on Replaced Parts for there Warranty. As Far as is it Worth it you should Look around at some Local Dealerships and see what there getting for similar Car with similar Mileage. How many mile do you need to change your clutch?
Well william what kind of car is it Honda? if it is hondas are good on clutchs ive seen many hondas go up to 100,000 miles or more without a clutch job if yes they are properly maintained and driven properly. How many mile do you need to change your clutch?
I have never changed one unless it wasn't working properly. Start and stop (city driving) wears a clutch faster than highway driving. Heavy loads and abuse also shorten service life. A properly installed clutch, pressure plate, release bearing, and pilot bearing might last the life of this car IF it is not abused.

Price seems a little steep for a car of this make and year. I usually get an estimate from %26quot;Blue Book%26quot; on the value of a car in the area it is located. How many mile do you need to change your clutch?
Clutch life largely depends on how the vehicle is driven, and where it is driven. a clutch can fail in a few thousand miles by Miss treatment. I have known clutches to last for many hundreds of thousands of miles when operated properly. If I were to place an average life span on a clutch I would say between 100 and 200 thousand miles. The car you are looking at has 140,000 miles on it and already had a new clutch installed. The price is in line with the type and model year, but I would be extremely wary because of the modifications that have been done on it. My opinion is that I would not buy it. Good luck!!How many mile do you need to change your clutch?
The Cluch changing is depending on the condition of traffic and bumps you ride/drive

So If you are a regular player of clutching than it will take 5000 to 7000 miles But if you are a wrong player of clutching than you ought to change after 2000 to 4000 miles

  • So my clutch went out on my car. Anyone know how much this is gonna cost?

    I drive a 2004 Chevy Cavalier

I stepped on my clutch, changed gears, and when I lifted my foot, the pedal wouldn't come back up.

Pulled over and it seems that the fluid is all leaked out. I filled it up, but nothing started working. It keeps leaking out. I believe on of the cylinders is blown. Anyone know how much that'll cost to fix?So my clutch went out on my car. Anyone know how much this is gonna cost?
you dont need a clutch. Sounds like the Slave Cylinder or Master Cylinder. Probably the Slave. But usually when one of these goes bad, the other works harder to compensate so it will eventually go bad too. Replace them both if you can afford it.

you need to replace those cylinders, then bleed the system before it will operate again. So my clutch went out on my car. Anyone know how much this is gonna cost?
you,ll need to replace both the clutch and the slave cylinder on it,so its going to cost you about 200 bucks to get this one back on the road again,i did one last week though and their not hard to do,good luck.

$20 repair manual or a visit to Auto Zones website can give you step by step. Or . Raise vehicle high enough to be able to work and remove trans from the side on the ground. Block vehicle , remove drive shaft, shift and clutch linkage remove trans mount bolts at the cross member, dust shield at the front ( if it still has one ). Support trans and engine, remove bell housing bolts, remove trans cross member. And lower away. Re and re the clutch disk , pressure plate and throw out and pilot bearing. It`s a good idea to have the flywheel resurfaced even if you do not see small hairline cracks in the surface. Borrow or rent a clutch alignment tool or you will curse for hours trying to get the input shaft in. Have fun. In the driveway with some air tools , ramps, all your parts and a box of beer . 2 guys can hit it off in an afternoon. may take longer to do the clutch after drinking all that beer though. Machining the flywheel not included..

How do i know when to change the clutch in my car?

sometimes it kicks out of a gear, and sometimes i go to shift and it makes a nasty gringing noise when the cluch is pushed and trying to shift into gearHow do i know when to change the clutch in my car?
That sounds less like a clutch problem and more like a transmission issue (bent forks or such inside). Clutches just slip when they need replacing due to wear or spring weakening. How do i know when to change the clutch in my car?
If you don't know you better take it to a technician. Those symptoms aren't nessesarily caused by a bad clutch. How do i know when to change the clutch in my car?
It looks like you need a new clutch and throw out bearing. it make the grinding noise because of the clutch plate being wore out and you are not able to push it (the clutch) far enough. good luck

Trust me mate, i'm 15 and i know that it has a bugger to do, you need to take the gearbox case off, and that is really really heavy, u also need to take of the flywheel which the clutch is attached to, if you put the clutch in the wrong way you will have 5 reverse gears and one forward gear. Mate get a garage to do it, it is a nightmare to do.How easy or hard is it to change a clutch in a fiat punto 55 and about how much is the part.?
For a profesionnal it's an easy car for an smsnteur is a tough part because you need experience to do that and tools. Also you need special tools so you will put i center the cluch into the flyweel. The part costs about 80-100鈧?and includes the cluch set and bearing.

    How to change a clutch?

I need to know of anybody who knows how to change a clutch, well not all of it just the release bearing ????????? will it take long ? do i have to get underneath the car?How to change a clutch?
We need the year make and model of the car or truck to explain how to pull this job off. It does require a lot of %26quot;back time%26quot;. If you have a front wheel drive car hire a private mechanic to do it because it takes a lot of tools and mechanical know-how. If the clutch is slipping right now the throw-out bearing isn't going to do squat! You'll need a pressure plate, clutch disc, machine shop to re-surface flywheel and a pilot bearing. How to change a clutch?
I can tell you had better find a real mechanic. You won't stand a chance.

The transmission has to be removed from the vehicle. You always check the clutch disc and pressure plate and many times the flywheel needs resurfacing at a machine shop.

If the release bearing is noisy, just keep driving. I've never taken a vehicle apart just for a release bearing. How to change a clutch?
Procedure varies depending on the car and whether it is rear or front drive though the following will apply -

The gearbox will have to be taken off the engine from underneath. This may need the removal of some engine mounts.

A good garage would do a simple one in about 2 hours but would take up to 5 hours for some cars (that is experienced people with full garage kit).

You would replace the whole clutch as a kit not just part of it while it was apart.

From your question I believe you will be taking it to the garage. How to change a clutch?
Yes i know, have changed many over the years - but older cars were easy compared to todays front wheel drive ones with a plumbers nightmare under the bonnet. On the mk1 Vauxhall astra 1200 you could change the clutch without removing the gearbox or dismantling anything else. I have often wondered why other manufacturers did not take this idea to heart. How to change a clutch?
If you're asking %26quot;do I have to get under the car%26quot; I think you'd better head to your nearest garage. Also, never change just one component, change the whole assy. No garage worth their salt would give you a warranty without changing the clutch assy. How to change a clutch?
You won't do it lying on your back in the road. It's a gearbox-off job, requiring a ramp and some fairly hefty tools. As already said, if you're determined to have it done then get the lot done at the same time, it'll save you paying another lot of labour in the future. How to change a clutch?

Change a clutch in a 1997 Suzuki RM80 dirt bike?

does anyone know any sites or diagrams anything that can help me learn how to change the clutch plates in my dirt bike 1997 Suzuki RM80Change a clutch in a 1997 Suzuki RM80 dirt bike?
It is soooooooo easy...First drain your oil...Then pull the side cover off the right side of your motor..Take the bolts out of your clutch basket..Should be a 9mm socket..Pull the outer plate out and you will be able to see your plates..Pull all your plates out..might have to use 2 small screwdrivers to get them out..go easy and make sure not to bend anything..You might have to use your steel plates if you didn't buy new...

Start putting in your new plates...start with a fiber plate and then a steel then a fiber and then a steel..and on and on...As long as you started with a fiber and ended with a fiber your good as gold..Put your plate back on...there might be a mark that you have to line up on your plate and your clutch boss..Like a dot and a little arrow so the plate fits all the way on..Now start putting your springs and bolts back on just snug..Once they are all snug..start to tighten them just a little more then snug..tighten one and then go across from theta one and tighten another and then across from that one..cris-cross..Do not tighten them too tight..don't want to break any....ok...now the side cover and gasket...if you broke your gasket get a new one...don't want it to leak..side cover bolts..just past snug...don't break one off....Your goood to go...Change a clutch in a 1997 Suzuki RM80 dirt bike?

There is a mechanics labor book that tells the mechanic how long a job should take. That time is how he charges the hourly labor costs to you. I done a clutch job years ago but it still the same... I am not a real mechanic and we ate lunch drank a few beers. Made a day of the whole thing. Bought a clutch plate alignment tool . We could have probable done it in 4 hours. But, like I say , we were in no hurry... If the mechanic finished the job before the book says--BULLY--he is a mechanic. He is still gona charge the hours what the book says. .

Volvo 850 2.5 clutch slip or traction control?

hi ,im certain its cluch slip but could a fault with the traction control have the same effect ? switching tracs on or off dos'nt seem to do any thing ,i have no idea how or what it does so i wanted to rule this out before striping anything,

theres no oil leak so i dont expect clutch end oil seal to be the cause ,im guessing but i think car has been used to pull a caravan ,is it possible to change clutch plate whithout splitting emgine and gear boxVolvo 850 2.5 clutch slip or traction control?
the traction control on this model will apply the brake to the wheel that is spinning that doesn't sound like what is happening for you

while i have not had to replace an 850 clutch. i have had numerous automatics out for torque convertor seal replacement [both turbo and normally asperated] it is much easier[and faster] to remove the engine and transmission together as a unit with the wiring harnesses still on them from the top

than to be squirreling around underneath pulling subframes, hanging the engine etc.

[the wiring harness seperates inside the computer box, ac will have to be drained and tube removed from rt. front corner of engine bay and rt.headlamp assembely must be removed on some models.

a cherry picker type engine hoist and a adjustable [tilts engine/trans as it comes out]

lifting bracket must be used [the auto boxes have a rubber slap mount on the left subframe that must be removed/renewed for clearance] [20 dollars east coast u.s.]

the manual trans model may not have one at all.

once all is out, they can be split normally [one last note if you replace the rear main engine seal make a driver out of a piece of pcv plastic pipe to ensure the new seal goes in perfectly square].

the first time i did this i beat the standard repair time by more than a couple hours. the added bonus of doing it this way is that other services can be accomplished in minuites instead of extra hours [ie: timing componants, water pump, additional tune up services, throttle body cleanout etc.]

one last note get a good shop manual for your car and study it thouroghly before starting this project and while it can be accomplished by one person it is best to have a spotter while doing the removing and installing part, as body clearances are tight. beer is not recommended until after the test drive.Volvo 850 2.5 clutch slip or traction control?
If the engine revs rise up when your driving and the engines under load the its your clutch.Dont panic ,the volvo 850 is an easy box to remove.Disconect the exhaust first then remove prop shaft, remove the gearbox mounting and let the engine tip back to give you room to get the top bell housing bolts. If you havnt got use of a ramp or a pit, jack it up high and put 4 axle stands under it.Use the jack to lower the gearbox, youll need someone to help you with this,so buy a crate of beer and get some mates round.Get a manual it will explain about lining the new clutch up and any other unforseen difficultysVolvo 850 2.5 clutch slip or traction control?
They're completely different symptoms: If th engine note rises, it's clutch slip - the TCS system cuts the throttle.

The clutch is between engine %26amp; gearbox, so you'll have a hell of a job changing it without splitting them - can all be done in car though, I think.Volvo 850 2.5 clutch slip or traction control?
it needs a new clutch...sorry gearbox has to come off to change...on some early vauxhalls you could replace the clutch with out removing the box...but not on the volvo...

    Clutch Engagement Range?

I used to own a Honda F4... the bike rode like a dream minus all the electrical issues I had with it, so I sold it and purchased a Yamaha R6.

When I first got the R6, I would stall at every other light... the range at which the clutch catches seems to be much more narrow and less forgiving versus the Honda, and I needed time to adjust. I do understand how to change clutch freeplay, it is not an issue of where the exact catch point is (I've set the freeplay in accordance with the owners manual and I've ridden it enough that I comes naturally now)-- what I want to know is whether there is a way to increase the range at which the clutch catches. I've been riding around like this for a while now, and I've adjusted to it for the most part... I havnt had issues for months now until I stalled at a light today (carelessness on my part), which is what had finally driven me to ask whether there is anything I can do about it.

Clutch change on a citroen xantia 1.9 TD 1997?

Could anyone please give me some advice on how to do this, whether I need anything special to do it and if you have any diagrams or anything? I have done this before but only on a rear wheel drive. ThanksClutch change on a citroen xantia 1.9 TD 1997?
Not a very nice job.FWD clutches usually a bit more troublesome than the in line RWD ones. You really need to follow a manual of some sort as there are numerous things to disconnect before lowering engine on LH side and removing box.Loosen both drive-shaft nuts before jacking car up and removing front wheels. My tip is to disconnect lower suspension joints on both sides and remove both drive-shafts completely, after draining gearbox oil into clean container.( RH shaft has two awkward bolts at support bearing)Tie hubs back with rope to ease shaft and g'box refitting. Careful with the speedo drive rubber %26quot;wedge%26quot; Check release fork and arm is OK. and be careful not to dislodge release bearing as you refit g'box .You can centralise pressure plate on flywheel by eye and touch. Take care not to stretch any hydraulic pipes when you lower the engine.Good luck!!Clutch change on a citroen xantia 1.9 TD 1997?

How do you not burn your clutch?

I drive like a normal person. Dont have my foot resting on the clutch when driving. Dont hold it in when at a traffic light. I let the clutch out when your supposed to in 1st gear. A burnt clutch does NOT smell like burnt rubber. Smells more like brakes do when you overheat them. You have something else going on there. How do you not burn your clutch?
sounds like you're taking off fine, but when you're shifting, maybe do it differently. let off the gas and push the clutch all the way at the same time. Shift, let it out fast and hit the gas at the same time. Or just dont use the clutch to shift, your honda has a fully synchronized transmission. How do you not burn your clutch?
no need to have your foot on the gas pedal before the clutch pedal is out \\\let the clutch out slowly while engaging the gas////

the clutch should not slip. How do you not burn your clutch?
Mustang... is correct - you're not smelling burnt clutch if it smells like rubber. A burnt clutch smells almost exactly like burnt brake pad, which is a sharp, slightly acrid organic-metallic smell.

If its a very low-mileage or new 09 model, you might just be smelling the bedding-in process on your brakes, gaskets and whatnot. Try popping the hood and see if the smell is slightly stronger there. If so, keep an eye on it, but otherwise, it sounds like the smell of a new car breaking in.How do you not burn your clutch?

  • Anyone know how to change a clutch cable in an 89 twinwheel transit PLEASE?

look its easy first check were the transmission is located if its on the left of the engine or right or under the gear stick .

second locate the cable on the clutch pedal get helper and tell him to press the clutch pedal and look for movement to locate the clutch cable.once you have located it take it off by pressing the clutch pedal down and with pair of pliers uncliping it/unbolt it from the transmission end.(always remember the cables route mark it if you need to)theres a cerclip at the pedal stopping the cable to come off take that off and the cable will slide off.

refitting it start feed the cable to the pedal and attach it to the pedal and secure it with the clip then feed the cable to the transmission garbing the end of cable with pair of pliers and pulling it until its in its position.Anyone know how to change a clutch cable in an 89 twinwheel transit PLEASE?
your best bet is to try to find a repair manual or contact the manufacturerAnyone know how to change a clutch cable in an 89 twinwheel transit PLEASE?
I've never tried on a twin wheel but on a 89 single wheel...

From underneath first undo the cable from the Gearbox end

Depending which gearbox is fitted it's either a adjuster that needs to be slackened and taken of or you can wedge something behind the arm and jemmy it off..That's the easy part, When the cable is disconnected from the Gearbox you need to realease it from the pedal end take care to have the drivers side footwell clean because there is a clip which attaches the cable to pedal and if you loose that you will have to go to a car spares shop or a breakers yard.

Once the cable is disconnected you need to go in the engine bay and take the whole cable from the bulkhead then it should be free to fall to the floor.... refitting is a reversal of removal........................Good Luck

How do I reach the bolts behind the engine of my 1988 Isuzu Trooper suv in order to change the clutch ?

I have a 1988 Isuzu Trooper with 5 speed transmission and an inline 4 cylinder engine. I am used to doing some work on older, domestic vehicles where I can move my large hands about easily. I will need to replace the clutch. It seems to me that there is a ridiculously small, almost nonexistant amount of space between the clutch housing-to-engine bolts and firewall. some bolts I cannot even see. I wonder if anyone has run into this problem? JohnHow do I reach the bolts behind the engine of my 1988 Isuzu Trooper suv in order to change the clutch ?
When you remove the bolts on the rear mounts (at transmission) the entire assembly drop creating an access to the upper bolts. Be sure to drain the fluid from the transmission first or it'll get real messy. You will still have to use a long extension, and posibbly a swivel socket. How do I reach the bolts behind the engine of my 1988 Isuzu Trooper suv in order to change the clutch ?
a lot of times, piece of cake.

long extension(very long) and swivel socket plus drop lite, from drive shaft area. How do I reach the bolts behind the engine of my 1988 Isuzu Trooper suv in order to change the clutch ?
You will have to move the engine forward. What I did was to take off the hood, take off radiator and the front grille. Took out the engine mounts and lifted the enginer slightly off the frame using a lifter. To move the engine a few inches forward, I also needed to disengage the engine propeller shafts and transmission brace and mount. Be sure you have a mount on that tranny case or it will fall down. Took about 4-5 hours work.

  • How can you change the clutch fluid in a 2002 gsxr and where is the spout located to fill it?

If you're referring to the hydraulic-actuated clutch (don't know if K2s have hydraulic or cable), it's the same deal as bleeding your brakes.

There should be a master cylinder on your left bar, and a bleed nipple (I'm not sure where, though your manual should show it, and if not, you could acquire a service manual online).

Get a bleeder kit, they're about 20 bucks and will save you making a mess.

It's often helpful to put a rag in a donut-shape around your master cylinder, to protect your bike in case you spill any fluid. (It'll damage paint)

Connect the bleeder tubing from the kit to the nipple and run it into a container. Syringe out as much fluid as you can from the MC, then put a little fluid in and do the following:

    - Crack open the nipple (just enough so that when you squeeze the lever it lets fluid out - should be about a quarter turn)

    - Squeeze lever.

    - Close nipple

    - Release lever

Repeat these steps until you see the new, clear fluid flowing out the bleeder tubing, making sure you've always got fluid in your MC (bleeding air out of the lines is a *****). Retighten the bleed nipple, disconnect the hose, and wipe off any fluid with a rag. Then fill up your MC to the line, chuck the cap back on, and you're good to go.

Check out some youtube vids to get your head around it first. How can you change the clutch fluid in a 2002 gsxr and where is the spout located to fill it?
There is no clutch fluid. Modern bikes have a %26quot;wet clutch%26quot;, meaning that the clutch is bathed in oil from the crankcase. This way, the oil in the clutch gets changed every 3,000 miles, and it takes the additional manufacturing process of making a clutch fluid tank. How can you change the clutch fluid in a 2002 gsxr and where is the spout located to fill it?
The %26quot;clutch fluid%26quot; is actually brake fluid and it bleeds just like the brakes do..... start at the bottom bleeder and keep adding fluid to the top as the level goes down until the same color fluid comes out the bottom. -and thats it.............. its flushed and changed.

Whats the easiest way to change a clutch on my 1985 Subaru GL hatchback?

im changing the clutch on my 85 and i was wondering if there was a diagram on the internet that could show me how because the book says i have to pull the engine to do it, is there an easier way or is a there a diagram you could show me, thanksWhats the easiest way to change a clutch on my 1985 Subaru GL hatchback?
I just did the clutch on my subaru a couple weeks ago. You do NOT need to pull the engine. Unhook the trans from the linkages, wires, driveshaft, and bellhousing bolts. You do not need pull the front axles, as you just need to seperate the engine and trans far enough to get the clutch and flywheel out. (make sure you buy a new flywheel or get your old flywheel resurfaced). Replace the clutch and reinstall. Do not let the trans hang on the clutch when putting it back in, this will warp the clutch plate. I was able to hold the trans up with the front axles and trans crossmember mount.

How hard is it to change a clutch on a 2WD 1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck? How much would it cost?

to a mechanic a clutch job on any truck 2wd is gravy work we love those the clutch kit can run anywhere from 100 to 200 i would go to local toyota dealer as they will probably have it in stock and ur getting the best quality of part how ever 97 would kinda have a few gm influences as toyota and gm have been friends since 92 when GEO came around so u could go with an AC delco clutch too neways its simple if u know what ur doing no u dont need a come along its not a semi support the front of the vehicle by jack stand as high as u can go. ull need all the room u can get next drop the drive shaft watch for gear lube out of the output shaft of the tranny with the truck at an angle u will loose alittle the motor is supported from the side dont worry about it next remove any crossmembers under the tranny out of the way with the tranny at an angle remove wiring harness speed sensor wires ect. then go inside the truck remove shift lever the remove tranny bolts from tranny support tranny with a jack and pull and drop tranny then R and R clutch throw out bearing and pilot bushing installation is reverse of removal. the pilot bushing is trick use a socket and some axel grease stuff the axel grease in the pilot bushing hole in the back of the crank using ur finger make sure u fill the socket with grease put an extension in the socket make sure socket fits snug in pilot bushing hole then with a hammer hit the extension as principles of hydraulics cant compress a fluid will force the pilot bushing out may have to hit and refill several times to make sure there is no air between the crank and pilot bushing u want that space full of grease and u do not want grease to come out between the socket and the bushing hole make sure its as tight as it can be or just use slide hammer and the right adapter. also make sure u put grease around the input shaft of tranny before install this will make them slide together easier and make sure u use the alignment tool to align cluch disc to crank hope this helpsHow hard is it to change a clutch on a 2WD 1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck? Ive changed brake pad's and roaters before, how much more difficult would the clutch pad be?How hard would it be to change a clutch pad myself?
Replacing a clutch is a big job but one definitely worth doing if you want to learn. I'd recommend doing it but like Rick said, if you've never done it then it would be good to have someone there with you who has had experience. It's not necessarily a hard job; it just takes a while. Give it a shot though. What's the worst that could happen? How hard would it be to change a clutch pad myself?
I could be said the clutch job is no more diffciult than the brake job--when you get to it. That's the trouble. First you must seperate the transmission from the engine, first disengaging the balljoints and other parts. Then the transmission must be lowered. Afterwards, the tramsission must be raised and aligned and brought together and everything put back together. It's a whole lot more work than a brake job--and you won't be sitting outside on a milk crate the whole time either! How hard would it be to change a clutch pad myself?
Considerable. To replace the clutch in most cars, you have to drop the transmission %26amp; get it out of the way. If you have a friend who has done this before, it would be worth a six-pack to get him to help, so you could learn. There are also specialized tools needs, like a input shaft stub tool. Maybe help your friend do his clutch, as a learning experience. It can be done on a garage floor, but you gotta know what you're doing....How hard would it be to change a clutch pad myself?

OLD 4x4 are problematic because the interior where the shifters come Thur has to be removed and the gear shifters taken off and underneath the cross member rusted exhaust and drive shafts have to be removed. some technicians remove the tail housing and transfer case so they can angle out the transmission V-6 trucks one piece exhaust cross over is a real pain. Generally the charge is around 8.0 hours plus parts so at Nissan Dealer your lucky to get your truck back with about a $1,200/$1.500 charge. Then add hydraulics. Not a job for armature technicians sliding around on cardboard but it can be done. We all have to start somewhere...

you dont you take it to the junkyard and buy ford f250 turbo desielHow to change a clutch on a 4x4 Dodge power ram 250?
This is a big task on a 4x4. Both driveshafts need to be marked for location and removed. This means the wheels and tires need to be chocked. The nice thing is there is room to work with out a lift. The transfer case sits on the crossmember and is bolted to the rear of the trans. Using a block of wood and a floor jack positioned under the transmission will support the weight. The trans. should be able to seperate from the bell housing and the crossmember unbolt from the frame and the hole unit can be slid back about 4 inches. A couple C clamps positioned at the crossmember, the floor jack, and even a jack stand will keep this stationary so the pressure plate, flywheel, and disc can be removed. Doing it this way requires at least 2 people, please don't attempt this by yourself. If you are, a different method is needed.

I would recommend having the flywheel resurfaced or replaced, this will provide the best wear and life of the clutch. Most auto parts stores offer the clutch disc by itself or a clutch kit. The clutch kit has the disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and an alignment tool. Go with the kit, it will save a lot of head aches later. Make sure to use brake parts cleaner on the pressure plate and flywheel prior to assembling the cluch disc. This will remove any dirty and grease from the mating surfaces.

If I remember correctly this job books out at around 14 hours. Of course they expect you to disassemble the transfer case from the transmission. This saves about 3 hours. When using a jack stand, do not place it on the transmission input shaft, this could damage the inner bearing. Also replace the pilot bushing or rearing in the rear of the crankshaft.

The shifters will need to be removed, both the trans. and the transfer.

A lot of work, but it can be done. Hope this helps. ChristopherHow to change a clutch on a 4x4 Dodge power ram 250?
if its a 4 wheel drive its actually easier to pull the engine out than to try and pull the transmission and transfer case out ,unless you own a transmission jack,i have pulled more engines than transmissions to replace clutches because its easier and quicker, the only problem you have with doing it like this is it takes two people to do it and their real hard to line back up sometimes, but it still takes less time than removing the drive shafts and all the related parts to the 4 wheel drive, good luck. How to change a clutch on a 4x4 Dodge power ram 250?

When i shift it feels a like it gets stuck and i cant put it in 1st or 2nd or 3rd.How often do i have to change my clutch on my 2000 toyota echo?
Most likely it would not be your clutch that is causing hard shifts. Usually when a clutch goes out it causes the engine to rev and no power going to the wheels. I say usually, it is possible that the clutch disk has come apart and pieces are jamming together, but that is unlikely. Your problem sounds like either the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder is going bad. First thing to do is check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. If low, top it off with brake fluid, then bleed your clutch system. If that doesn't fix the problem, then check the adjustment. Your pedal should move about 1/4 inch before you start feeling the clutch. If it still isn't working, then change the clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder, refill with new brake fluid and bleed the air out.How often do i have to change my clutch on my 2000 toyota echo?

How do i change the clutch cable on my 2003 rm125?

my cable at the moment is very tight so i bought a new clutch cable but dont know how to put it on ... do i have 2 drain any clutch oil or anything? what do i do. thanks. How do i change the clutch cable on my 2003 rm125?
draining oil is not a requirement when changing out a clutch cable.

before installing the new cable you will of course have to take the old one off.to do this you will want to start at the engine where the clutch arm is where the cable hooks to,the end of the cable that is attached to the clutch arm should look like a Miniature barrel..there should also be a slot in the clutch arm where the cable slides through.you will have to probably move the clutch arm towards you so that you can persuade the cable through the slot.you will want to unloosen any nuts that's holding the cable in place before you go any further.now that you have one end of the cable taken care of you'll want to move up towards the left of the handle bars where your clutch perch is where the threads in to.screw the bolt at the end of the cable out from the perch, once this is done you'll be able to line up the cable with the slot grooves in the perch and lever.now, you'll notice if you look underneath the clutch lever that the end of the clutch cable again looks like a miniature barrel, after lining up the cable with the slots you'll be able to pull the cable through.now that you have the old cable out you can replace the new one by doing this procedure in reverse order as explained.

before you take off the old one u will want 2 squese the clucth in and put vice grips on the lever by the engine. if not it will be hard to hook up the new one.

then 2 take off the old one just unscrew i at the lever at the handle bars. then at the engine.

Before you take it off take digital pictures or, better, feed the new one to sit side by side with the old one so that you get the routing correct, a poorly installed/routed cable will not work correctly and may be damaged.

How do you change a clutch cable for an aprilia rs 125?

do you need to take the whole engine apart just to change a cable? How do you change a clutch cable for an aprilia rs 125?
No,wind off the adjuster on the lever that you pull. Then pull the nipple and cable out.Loosen the adjuster at the engine and do the same(it may be a good idea to photograph exactly where the cable feeds down).Once you have disconnected at both ends, you can now feed the whole cable out.Refitting is the reverse, but make sure it doesn't snag or kink anywhere and the bars turn freely without affecting operation of the clutch.Once fitted you should adjust to give 2-4mm free play on the lever.

If I remember correctly you'll have to remove cross member thats under the transmission and tranfer case. You'll have to unhook the drive shafts, linkages and remove the transmission and transfer case, You'll need to resurface flywheel and replace clutch assembly. How do you change a clutch in a 1978 ford bronco with a 351M engine ?
If you have never done this, please get a manual and study the steps. Basically you will:

Support the vehicle on jack stands or a lift

Support the transmission while you remove driveshaft and crossmember

Remove shifter from inside the car

    remove transmission

    Remove bellhousing from engine

remove pressure plate and clutch disc.

    reverse all this to reinstall.

Put in new throwout bearing while doing this.

Ford Probe *cringe*.... Unless it is like brand new with 25,000 miles on it or less just get a new car.....How long should it take for a shop to change the clutch on my 91 Ford Probe GL?
Really you know what, you are going to get ripped off if you go to a shop anyway so I don't know if you are going to want to take it to get fixed. I mean if you have someone that you know and is good with cars all you have to do is followed, Well really it's all about how long it will take you. I know that we had to do that in ours and most of the work is lifting the engine up. If you lift the engine out it should take a few hours depending if you know what you are doing. For a shop to do that it will be like more money than the car is worth. I know how much fun these are to drive. So basically don't take it to a mechanic. I know because I am one and I was sick of getting kicked in the A** When I took my cars to the shop, so have good luckHow long should it take for a shop to change the clutch on my 91 Ford Probe GL?

I had a 74 ford with bad motor mounts and i only got charged $450. for a new clutch and motor mounts, so i'm not sure how much your cv joints are going to cost. if your smart you'll find a well certified auto shop and just get a quote. i'd estimate right around $500-$1000. but i'm not a pro on some of the 90's cars. but trust me when they pull the motor they pull it right up to the radiator and this can take a while. it took my friends shop 2 hours. How long should it take for a shop to change the clutch on my 91 Ford Probe GL?
When it comes to hours and prices, a reputable shop will charge by what is known as %26quot;flat rate%26quot; hour. This is determined by a book that is available to repair shops and gives an estimate of how long it should take to replace parts. This will not be available to you or any other customer to look at, so don't bother asking. The bottom line is that you need to shop around and get an estimate. You should dismiss both the lowest and highest priced places. The highest will most likely be the dealership and the lowest will probably be a shop that has never done one before and has no clue as to the trouble a Probe is. So that leaves the others. That will give you an estimate of what it will cost. Do you have a sentimental attatchment to the car? If so, then you will probably want to get the car fixed. If not, then seriously consider shopping around for another car and see what kind of trade in you can get for yours. The trade in value won't be much, but will be better than putting money into what you have and not getting that much more for it on trade. The time it takes for the actual job and the time it takes for the shop to get your car finished is actually 2 different things. If the shop had ALL the possible parts that is needed to complete the job waiting there when you get your car there then the time would be a lot quicker than the actual time that it takes. The actual time involves tearing down your car, seeing what is needed (parts), then ordering the parts and waiting on the parts people to deliver them. That can in some cases almost double the time that it would take for the actual repair. Most shops are not out to rip anyone off. The prices that are charged are to cover overhead, and to try to make a fair and honest living for their families. Then there is the government regulations from the DNR and EPA just to name a couple. So once again, bottom line, shop around and get prices then compare that cost to the cost of replacing the car. Then let your pocketbook be your guide.

My bike is stranded and i need to replace the cable to move it.

Good luck on push starting a vtx1300 anyway!

Put the cable in the handlebar side first, it's just a slip in end with a metal disc, and the cable routes thru the slit in the lever. Run the cable to the casing side, and you'll see the lever where the other side attaches. Use a flat head screwdriver to push the lever forward by hand, and slip the cable in the slot on the lever. When you let go of the lever, the slack will tighten up on the cable. Be sure you route the whole cable as the old one was, to insure theres no obsrtuctions, or pinching of the cable along the way. Adjust the cable at the bottom to take out any initial slack if needed, and do the final adjustments at the clutch lever adjuster. Can you give me some advice on how to change a clutch cable?

Get a second opinion. There is no such thing as %26quot;clutch oil%26quot; unless they are referring to the fluid in the clutch hydraulic system. In that case, it is usually DOT-3 brake fluid. The TRANSMISSION oil may need to be changed, but is usually good for 100,000+ miles. Some manufacturers don't recommend changing it at all, just topping off if it leaks.

Any advice or reference websites anyone can suggest on how to replace? Is it an easy fix or should I take it into the shop? Any advice would be great, Thanks. How do you change a Clutch Cable on a 74 Honda CB 450 DOHC?
A CB 450 was my first bike, (loooong ago!).

    That's a good old bike.

You will need to remove the tank.

Start at the hand-lever. Disconnect the old cable.

There's a 'puck' on the cable end that fits the handle.

You must turn the cable to get it out of the slot.

(Just look carefully, you'll see how.)

turn the handle adjuster all the way in leaving max. clearance.

Install the end of the new cable.

then work down the old cable, removing it and putting the

new one in its place until you get down to the engine case.

You will have to remove the left case cover.

(An impact driver is suggested for those phillips head bolts.

they WILL be frozen in place, and a screw driver will

    likely strip the heads.)

Loosen the clutch adjuster to give you maximum play,

(screw the collar all the way in), and remove the old cable.

If you watch how it comes off it's easy to get the new one on.

There's a slotted box fitting that the 'puck' fits into.

Reinstall the side case cover, (it's a good idea to oil

the threads of those bolts before inserting them so that

they stick less next time), and adjust the clutch play

at the side cover, (that slotted round plug), by loosening

the holding bolt, turning the plug untill you've got

    tension, and retightening the bolt.

    You should be done.

You can fine tune the tension with the lever

adjuster. How do you change a Clutch Cable on a 74 Honda CB 450 DOHC?

first you gotta be good with cars somewhat. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and hit you with a shopping list first. You'll need a good tool set, lots of sockets, all metric, probably no std. since it's a yota.

2 jacks(1 to support engine, one to use to pull out trans, it's kinda heavy, it helps for breaks)

Pair of Jack stands, 4 is even better

Seal puller or pliers(change the axle seals, I didn't and had a bad leak so take my advice.)

New clutch kit(rockauto.com has awesome deals)

Trans fluid, probably dexron mercon III, usually is.

    Drip pan.

Raise the front end of the car, support it along the frame rails, get it as high as you can, nothing sucks worse than not having enough room.

Pull off the front wheels. Unbolt the calipers and tie up to the top of the fenderwells, specifically the driver side since the trans will come out of that side. You can either remove the entire steering knuckle and shock/spring or leave it, it won't be in the way too much.

Under the hood, take out the batter(free up some room).

Anything you feel would get in your way, if you can get all the bolts out of the top of the transmission then great.

Feel around the transmission and disconnect any wiring. I believe there are 3. Vehicle speed sensor, reverse lights, and speedometer, could be only 2 if VSS and speedo are on the same, with new cars they usually are. Remove the nut that is on the front axle, usually a big 30+mm socket is required. A 3 jaw puller is a good tool to have so you can push out the splined axle from the hub. This will then allow you to yank out the CV axles. You'll probably have an intermediate shaft that idles on a bearing attached to the engine block. That should come off too. The idea is to get anything touching the transmission off of it...you knew that. You'll probably need to remove some of the inder fender lining, often there are acess panels, but who knows. I just assume you can figure that stuff out, if not then don't bother with this project. Anyway, back to the topic. At this point the only things attached to the transmission should be the clutch slave cylinder, shifting linkage(should be 2 or 3 cables coming from the firewall, pretty easy to remove), and of course the transmission mounts. one on top and one on the bottom/sideish area towards the front of the car. I can't be for sure but they stick out like a sore thumb so you can figure those out. Be sure to have the trans supported when you remove these, they should be the last thing removed as it will put stress on the input shaft of the transmission and could seriously screw it up. The last thing you want is to have to replace the trans. With that supported, remove the perimeter bolts that connect the transmission to the engine block, they go around in a circle. I would also like to add that you may have to remove the starter, never worked on a solara so I'm not positive, it varies. By now the trans should have a clear exit and should be supported by either you or the jack, I us a jack that is parallel with the engine and transmission so it can be pulled out with the aide of the wheels. It probably weighs about 80lb at least so be careful or get some help. Once it's out, remove the clutch, you'll have to hold the flywheel and use a big 1/2 ratchet because the motor will turn over. Remove the flywheel, have it turned, just something smart to do whenever you got it down this far. Finally it's a good idea to remove the pilot bearing in the end of the crank shaft. Don't bother getting a pulller. Instead, get a dowel of some sort that is roughly the same diameter as the hole in the bearing, it's gotta be somewhat close. Next get a bunch of paper towels and a small bucket/bowl of water, drench the paper towels and stuff as many as you can in the hole. Keep packing it with the dowel until it's so tight you have to tap them in, this will force the bearing out. Now lube up the new one slightly, line it up and tap it in by putting a socket or something over top of it. Put flywheel back on being careful not to get grease on it at all. Seriously, if you can don't even touch the surface. Torque to spec. You have to you may screw it up if you don't. Reciprocating things should always be torqued to spec. Second, put on the clutch with the clutch alignment tool that is usually supplied. YOu do this by sticking the splined tool into the clutch disk and then putting it on the flywheel(remember which side says this side up), with the tip of the alignment tool in the pilot bearing it should stay so you can put the pressure plate over the clutch. Tighten in a star pattern and torque to spec. Tighten evenly, not all the way at once. Do like increments of 25ft/lbs. with the trans out, remove the axle seals, just yank em out, smear a little lub on the new ones and tap em in with a pipe, don't hit them directly because you could damage them, they need to be hit in the center so a socket or pipe with an end of sorts needs to be used. I once used a chain link fence post with a hatchet to tap on in. Now just button everything back up. It's a lot easier than it looks and I have no doubt anyone that knows how to use tools could do this. The haynes manual is somewhat helpful but not very much. You just have to be able to look at things and remember how everything went back together but typically things like this are made to go back together one way and one way only. Hope that helped.

I need to change the slave cylinder on a 2000 Ford Focus and normally these things are accessible from the engine bay or beneath the car but in this case it appears to be inside the bell housing. Is there a way to change this without pulling the transmission out? Any help here would save me a lot of time.

    Thanks,

Concentric mounted slave cylinders are the rage nowadays. I've had to pull the 6-speed out of my Z-28 twice now for slave cylinder issues.

How hard is it to change a clutch in a 94 Mustang?

I have a 94 mustang, and the clutch is showing sings on going out. so I bought a new one. and decided to put it in myself. I bought the Repair Manual for my car. and it look like i could do it. but i just wanted a opinion on how hard or complicated it is for someone who has never done it before. How hard is it to change a clutch in a 94 Mustang?
You at least need a good set of jack stands but doing it while laying on your back isn't real easy. It's much easier if you have a lift and a transmission jack. Since the transmission provides the engines rear support, and the transmission has to come out, you'll have to have a way to support the rear of the engine when you remove the transmission and bell housing. Don't just replace the clutch, also replace the throw out and pilot bearings or you'll be back in there in a short time doing it again. You'll also need a clutch alignment tool which can be purchased for a few bucks at any auto parts store. It isn't a terribly hard job but, you need the proper tools, stands, fixtures and knowledge. How hard is it to change a clutch in a 94 Mustang?
Its not complicated, just difficult to do without putting the car up in the air (over your head). To replace the clutch, you need to remove the transmission bell housing. Its heavy and usually very difficult to get the top bolts in and out. Good luck! How hard is it to change a clutch in a 94 Mustang?
It's a pretty big job. If you've never had a trans out before I suggest you bring along someone who has. There are quite a few safety concerns both during and after the repair.

How much should a mechanic charge to change my clutch?

I have a 98 toyota corolla and the clutch went out last week. I have had three mechanics tell me three very different estimates. What is a reasonable quote? I live in Oklahoma City by the way, if that matters...Thanks.How much should a mechanic charge to change my clutch?

First look in the yellow pages in your phone book for a clutch shop.Like maybe you have a Clutch Pros's in your city.I own a clucht shop(Clutch Mart).ok give the shop a call and get a est.for the job. Then call the other clutch shops and get the cheapest est.

make sure they only use new parts, and they surface the flywheel when replacing the clutch. The clutch kit should have a presure plate, cluthc disc, and a release bearing.(this model doesn't have a pilot bearing).Ok now call back to the one you feel is the best one and ask them if they match prices. So if you get an est of $428.00 at one place and you get $349.00 at another ask them if they would match the other places est.Now check the warranty on the clutch job,I offer a life time warranty on mine, however they may not do that where you live.

So how do you know the clutch is going out ?

Is it hard into gear ?

    does it grind into gear

does the clutch pedal go all the way to the floor and stay there

    Because

Your car also has a hydrualic clutch master cylinder

and a clutch slave cylinder. If these go bad it can cause the car to be hard into gear or it will not go into gear. The cold weather can cause both of these to fail.If they are bad the cost to replace them is no where near the cost of a clutch job.The clutch master cylinder is about $125.00 parts and labor the clutch slave is under $100.00 parts and labor.

Ok does the clutch slip ??

You can have the clutch adjusted if there is no free travel in the clutch pedal. Most clutch shops will do the adjustment for FREE.Having no free travel will cause the clutch to slip. This model has this problem. The adjustment in the pedel if there is no free travel can make the clutch slip.Just a simple adjustment can fix the problem.

$250 plus parts :)How much should a mechanic charge to change my clutch?
to do a clutch its not cheap so my guess is a least 200 dollars for labor plus what ever the parts you needHow much should a mechanic charge to change my clutch?
bring it here to Missouri and ill have it done in around 3 hrs or so for $300 if it was a rear wheel drive it would be around $250 but front wheel is a b**** it sucks worse then a 4x4 so this is what your looking for 3hrs for $300 or so thats what i would charge anywayHow much should a mechanic charge to change my clutch?
At most it would probably be $500 @ $70 an hour. Maybe can talk to a buddy and give him $300 or so?? Also, it is called for about 5.3 hours labor. And the quoated part they stated was $66.00 just for the clutch disc. Will be more with other parts involved. Like pressure plate, and pilot bearing, anf throwout bearing. Just a ballpark figure though. How much should a mechanic charge to change my clutch?
It shouldn't take more then three hours labor plus parts. Find out what they charge per hour, and what they are charging for parts. It's not that hard a job for a mechanic at a shop. How much should a mechanic charge to change my clutch?
Call your local used car sales lots and ask them who they would recomend . They deal with repairs all the time and know whos honest and whos not. I had a clutch changed in my pick up for $400 and thought the price was good , I had to take it back a month later and the charged another $250 . They blamed it on defective parts . A month later I had to take it to a shop refered by a local car lot . They fixed it right for $500 ( 3 years ago ) The throw out arm and pivot ball were worn out . The first shop just changed the clutch set up , the second shop checked all the moving parts and found the real problem.

Long story short - the lowest price is not always the best deal. Ask people you know , get it in writing. How much should a mechanic charge to change my clutch?
Price is really gonna very on what exactly you are being quoted on. hourly labor rates run $40-70 per hour. Parts are going to vary on what they quoted, A complete job including Clutch kit( pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bearing and clutch disk) as well as clutch slave and master. $300-$500 If you were quoted for clutch disk only less than $50-100 for the parts. So with that said probably anywhere from $300 to $1000

  • How difficult is it to change a clutch in an 89 Chevy Camaro RS 305 with out a lift?

How difficult is it to change and how long will it take without a lift, just on jackstands in my driveway? What is going to be the most difficult part? Can I use a floor jack to lower the transmission? How difficult is it to change a clutch in an 89 Chevy Camaro RS 305 with out a lift?
figure a day laying on your back to do the job and yes you can use a floor jack on the tranny. How difficult is it to change a clutch in an 89 Chevy Camaro RS 305 with out a lift?
it shouldnt be to bad though i'd recomend ramps because thats what i feel safe with, and are you changing just clutch or clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearings, and ye but put some boards between the tranny and the jack. idk why but its how i was tought and it works lolHow difficult is it to change a clutch in an 89 Chevy Camaro RS 305 with out a lift?
Getting it high enough to get the tranny out from under it would be the hard part, because you start out so low to begin with. One of the ways i have done clutches in the past is to use a strap through the shifter hole in the floor board. Just remember to remove any part of the console the strap could damage. How difficult is it to change a clutch in an 89 Chevy Camaro RS 305 with out a lift?
I agree that it should be raised up on ramps to save your back and arms in the process. A jack with blocks will help with the tranny. If its your first time, it will be interesting, just take ur time. How difficult is it to change a clutch in an 89 Chevy Camaro RS 305 with out a lift?
I have done clutches before without a lift, jack the car up and use jackstands.... it wont be that bad, and yes use a jack to help lower the transmission. The most difficult part is getting the trans back up in there and aligned, buy that green plastic spline tool when bolting the pressure plate back to the flywheel.

Done enough of these in my days.

You only need to take out the cradle bolts on the drivers side and it will drop enough to get the trans out, you may need to loosen the passenger side a couple of turns, but it is easily done.
