If you have a front wheel drive car hire a private mechanic to do it because it takes a lot of tools and mechanical know-how. The transmission has to be removed from the vehicle. You always check the clutch disc and pressure plate and many times the flywheel needs resurfacing at a machine shop.

The gearbox will have to be taken off the engine from underneath. This may need the removal of some engine mounts.
A good garage would do a simple one in about 2 hours but would take up to 5 hours for some cars (that is experienced people with full garage kit).
