I know quit a bit how to drive car but only on holidays?

cause' there are no traffic on the road.now pl advice how tocontrol the car on busy road where frequent stoping is unavoidable.I wonder how driver control the car placing his foot on clutch with 3rd or 4th gear. suppose i m driving the car on 3rd gear suddenly i ve to press the break now what to do to press the clutch and change gear or car will run on 3rd gear again. In my case i found that car stopped.pl adviceI know quit a bit how to drive car but only on holidays?
Well this is a classic problem almost all learners face while, controlling the clutch and whether or not to downshift. The simple thing to do is to first realise when, ie what speed ur car starts to knock in a particular gear, then make a mental note of ur car speed by guessing it. Now if you are in 4th gear %26amp; have had to brake from say 60 kmph to below 10 kmph. Now the wise thing to do would be to press the clutch and downshift to 2nd gear, rather than to balance the clutch and the throttle to get the car back to higher speeds. Here's a speed to gear guide if you follow this it'll help you.

0-5 kmph : 1st gear

5-20 kmph :2nd gear

20-40 kmph : 3rd gear

40-60 kmph : 4th gear

55 + kmph : 5th gear depending on the road conditions whether or not there's traffic, or if the road's inclined or not.

The above boundary conditions provide you with a smooth ride in ur car and also a good fuel economy.

The more you try to balance the accelerator with the clutch, the more fuel you end up wasting, but this doesn't mean you don not use the clutch at all. Use the clutch but do not override it.

Hope this helps.I know quit a bit how to drive car but only on holidays?
that,s where your other foot comes in. you press the clutch then the brake then if you have to shift go ahead and shift while your foot is on the clutch then take your foot off the clutch and brake and give it gas and keep going. it just takes practice.I know quit a bit how to drive car but only on holidays?
This is the simple formula.

0-5 kmph : 1st gear

5-20 kmph :2nd gear

20-40 kmph : 3rd gear

40-60 kmph : 4th gear

55 + kmph : 5th gear

Changing gear without stepping on clutch when the car is off?

Sorry to ask this but i'm just a tad bit worried. My friend and I was sitting in my car waiting for another friend and my friend decided to play with my manual stick shift. He shifted it in a couple of gears before I could tell him to stop. I was wondering with my car off and without having my foot on the clutch can this gear shifting damage the car? I know the basics behind how a clutch works but not sure how it works when the car is not turned on.Changing gear without stepping on clutch when the car is off?
minscule damage. whoever drives will probably do more damage through thier gear changes while driving than you will fiddling with the shift lever while the engine is stopped.Changing gear without stepping on clutch when the car is off?
No damage.Changing gear without stepping on clutch when the car is off?
nothing to worry about thats how i learned to find the positions of my gearsChanging gear without stepping on clutch when the car is off?

im told that there is a wet clutch, and a dry clutch ,on all makes of cycles. how can you tell the differance between a wet or a dry clutch? any one?Motor cycle clutch.all bvikes have wet or dry clutches in them. im changing one out, but i need to know what t?
yea pretty much wat he said.....jsut want to add that if its a wet clutch setup u can jsut shuffle the clutch plates around and u'll have a clutch again unless u really fried it.......usually can do this 2-6 times depending on wear......Motor cycle clutch.all bvikes have wet or dry clutches in them. im changing one out, but i need to know what t?
I think as a general rule, bikes with a longitudinal crankshaft, and shaft drive, have 'automotive style' single-plate dry clutches. BMW twins and Moto Guzzi, for instance. Japanese bikes with sideways four-cylinder engines have multi-plate wet clutches. If a bike has a 'clutch basket' on the side of the engine, that's a wet clutch.

  • How much can I expect to receive for my Peugeot 206 as a part ex-change?

    I have a Y reg (2001) 3 door Peugeot 206 1.1 lx.

Mechanically, it is in good working order, I've had new brakes in the past 12 months, and a full set of tyres, a catalytic converter and full exhaust about 18months-2 years ago, I also had a new clutch about 6 months ago. I just want a newer car, particularly one with 5 doors. The car is 9 years old now and the longer I leave it, the less I will get for it when I come to upgrading.

The mileage is 78,000 with a part service history due to the previous owners. The interior of the car is in good condition, but on the exterior, there is a small dent and a chip in the paint which has rusted both on the front left wing from a bump I had last year. There are also a few slight dents in the door panels from inconsiderate people on car parks. I have owned this car for 3 and a half years, I have only recently finished paying for it. Bike engined go kart - what can be used?

Am already planning to build Tiger Super Six kit car over the winter, but fancied something to build over the summer and have some fun with.

So my question is - what is the most adventurous bike engine you could feasibly fit onto a go-kart type chasis without breaking the bank? Has anyone built for example with a Ninja engine? If so how have you arranged eg clutch/gear change/engine mounting-orientation in respect of gear change?

I know that may sound ridiculous but this would be for fun not for entering a league to race with and thus obsense power sounds good to me... altho i do worry how it would go round corners

    any thoughts appreciated

    Clutch oil resevoir?

I have a 1999 honda accord with manual transmittion (stickshift). I was told that there was no clutch oil to change. There is a plastic oil resevoir under the hood (with the mark of MIN %26amp; MAX). The owner manual said that it is the clutch oil. Do I need to replace this oil? how?

In the automatic transmission, the transmission oil should be replaced. How about the stickshift?Clutch oil resevoir?
Most clutches use hydraulics in lieu of mechanical linkages. The fluid is the same as brake fluid on most systems. If the reservoir was never opened and is between the add and full marks you really don't need to change it.

If you want to change it -- and it won't hurt to do so -- there should be a bleed valve on the slave cylinder on the side of the bellhousing. You bleed the system the same way you would bleed a brake system. Keep the reservoir topped up and bleed it until fresh fluid comes out .Clutch oil resevoir?

    Clutch oil resevoir?
With a manual transmission you do have oil inside the transmission. It should last a very long time as there is no combustion going on in there. You could probably take it 60k miles easily before you changed that oil.

About the clutch %26quot;oil%26quot;... I believe Honda's use a hydrolic clutch, so that fluid is actually the hydrolic fluid for your clutch. That should last forever really so long as it stays between those two marks you can leave it alone.Clutch oil resevoir?
    Hi

The oil used is just brake fluid. you should have it flushed every 2 years, just like your brake fluid. It will take dot3 or dot 4 . read your manual for what kind it takes.Clutch oil resevoir?
If you have two reservoirs side by side in the engine compartment, one is the clutch reservoir. Check your owners manual to see if it also uses brake fluid (hydraulic oil). It should be to the max line.

If you only have one reservoir under there, you don't have a hydraulic clutch.

Manual transmissions use gear oil, it needs to be checked every couple years to make sure it has enough in it, but seldom is changed, unless you have a problem.

How do know when your car needs a new clutch? How Much?

I drive a 2001 Honda Civic EX Coupe and the clutch has never been changed, when I shift to 2nd 3rd and 4th gear it's kind of hard and some times the gear pops out to neutral I also have that problem with reverse gear but not 5th or first

Do I need a new clutch?

    How much are they?

Where can I get it fixed? How do know when your car needs a new clutch? How Much?
If its jumping out of gear it sounds like a gearbox problem, possibly the selector. The clutch can make the gearshift stiff or hard but it will not normally make it jump out of gear, if it is gearbox it will be very expensive. How do know when your car needs a new clutch? How Much?
That is probably your synchronizers in the transmission. When your engine starts to out race the wheel speed you need a clutch and it can go quickly from there. If they pull your trans. make sure they put in a clutch while it is out. You might check parts stores online for a remanufactured trans. How do know when your car needs a new clutch? How Much?
    Probably not your clutch.

Take it to a couple different shops to get looked at and have them print out an estimate.

Yamaha Banshee 350cc. How to work the gears?

I have a 2003 banshee and am having some problems with the gearing.

    1. where do i put the gear lever so that when i start it the quad will be in neutral?

    2. after driving around why can i never find neutral again?

    3. do i need to use the clutch when changing up gears, or only when downshifting?

    thanks

P.S. dont answer if you know nothing about quads and are going to say something stupidYamaha Banshee 350cc. How to work the gears?
--If your not experienced, allways use the clutch when shifting gears. If you shift improperly without using the clutch, it's easy to do damage to the transmission and internal shift linkage. Save that for race days.

--Practice shifting while the engine is off. Stand on the side of the quad and rock it foward and back while putting upward or downward pressure on the shift lever.

--You might be having trouble finding neutral because the trani is starting to get worn.

--Try to find neutral while the quad is still rolling. Or shift down to first and come to a stop with the clutch lever pulled in. Rev up the engine and let go of the throttle. The second the engine starts to slow down, shift up softly.

--Your clutch lever %26quot;free play%26quot; might not be adjusted properly. Adjust it so you can pull in the lever about 1/4%26quot; before the cable gets pulled.

--The shift pattern is one down, five up.

--Starting from neutral, press the shift lever down to go into first gear.

--Lift the shift lever up softly and it'll go into neutral. If you lift the shift lever up firmly, it will go through neutral and into second.

--Lift the shifter up again and again and again to get to 3-4-5-6

--Similar procedure to down shift. Press down on shifter to go to a smaller gear. Press down again and again until you get to neutral, or first gear.

If you ride with MX boots and your quad has nerf bars, there might not be enough clearance to get your toe under the shift lever. Unbolt the shift lever and raise it up a notch.Yamaha Banshee 350cc. How to work the gears?
The gear needs to be in between 1st and 2nd to be in neutral, first is the one at the bottom so the next one up is neutral. You don't need to use the clutch to change up gears just part shut off the throttle when selecting next gear. But you must also give a little extra throttle before changing up.Yamaha Banshee 350cc. • How do i know if my fan clutch needs to be changed?

i have changed the radiator, and my lexus es300 92 continues to overheat. they have changed a few other things, and nothing seems to work. how do i know if its the fan clutch. i do know that the fan stops if i place an object on it to stop it, should it do that? How do i know if my fan clutch needs to be changed?
You may want to stop by a repair shop that specializes in Toyotas/Lexus' ,,,talk with them and get an idea.

I dont think your car has a fan clutch.

You should have an ELECTRIC FAN that is controlled by a lil' %26quot;mini-computer box%26quot; instead of just a simple Temp Sensor%26amp; Relay set-up.

An Electric Fan will typically blow approximately 35~40MPH type airflow.

To put your hand 6'' or so Behind the fan Should feel similar to sticking your hand out the window while driving 40mph.

The Temperature of the %26quot;breeze%26quot; from the fan Should be Unbearably Hot.

    It's a 200*F,, 40mph Wind.

You should NOT be able to stop the fan when Car is at full Temp %26amp; IF fan is at full speed.

Weak Electric Fan Motor---Rare,but it happens.

They are usually either Good or Bad.

Faulty Fan Control ECU---far more likely.

It COULD be failing to switch from Cold Start mode to Hi-Temp/Hi Speed Fan mode???

Loose or Broken Fan Blade--this is NOT unusual on a wide variety of electric fans.

The Mechanical Connection between the actual Fan Blade and the Electric Motor Shaft may be faulty.

The Fan Blade Hub can break,,,or the retainer/tightening nut comes loose,,,or whatever.

Ok,,the Blade WILL Turn,,,and Appears to be Working.

But it SLIPS and cannot pull enough air thru the radiator.

The General Symptoms are SIMILAR to a bad fanclutch,

but the actual fault causing the symptoms is different. How do i know if my fan clutch needs to be changed?
With the engine off and at a relatively cool temperature (e.g. when you've not recently been running the engine), attempt to spin the fan by hand. It should spin freely because when the engine's off and cool, the clutch should be disengaged.

You might also run the engine and observe the fan. After the engine idles for a few minutes, your fan should %26quot;kick on%26quot; and start turning. If it doesn't turn on within 5 or 10 minutes (assuming it's relatively warm outside), you probably need a fan clutch. If it does turn on, pay attention to the fan and watch to see whether it %26quot;wobbles.%26quot; Sometimes, even if a fan does occasionally turn, the clutch can wear-- this might affect the efficiency of the fan which could contribute to (but likely not cause all by itself) your overheating.

This could also be a matter of your water pump, but those usually fail in the %26quot;open%26quot; position, so if anything a failed water pump on a relatively modern car will result in an engine that doesn't want to get up to operating temperature. If by some freak occurance your water pump failed in the %26quot;closed%26quot; position, that could cause overheating.

If this car hasn't had regular coolant flushes throughout its lifetime (at least at 100,000 miles and then every 50,000 thereafter), I'll echo what others have said and urge you to get to a radiator shop. Have it checked out, and if your radiator is physically okay, have the shop do a complete service on it.How do i know if my fan clutch needs to be changed?
well if its not working while your car is hot and its not working um yes replace it what could you loose and could also be your thermostat not working telling your car that its a different temp then what it really is if that dosent help run it into a tree and get a new one just kiddingHow do i know if my fan clutch needs to be changed?

How to use the clutch in a motorbike?

should i use the clutch only when changing gears, and when i am braking and the bike is coming to a complete halt... or should i always use the clutch everytime i brake??How to use the clutch in a motorbike?
you don`t have to use the clutch every time you use the brakes, only when you are coming to a stopHow to use the clutch in a motorbike?
    Use it when:

    You change gears

bike is coming to a complete halt(rev the throttle every few sec. so it doesn't stall)

If you are not going to use the throttle for more than 4 seconds when you brake pull the clutch inHow to use the clutch in a motorbike?
You should use the clutch when ever you change gears and when coming to a complete halt. How to use the clutch in a motorbike?
only use your clutch when u are going to come to a complete stop. How to use the clutch in a motorbike?
When you have started the bike, and in neutral, you pull clutch in a push shifter into first. You give the bike some revs, not much, and slowly let the clutch out. When you switch into second, pull clutch in, let go of throttle, click up and release clutch as you twist throttle. Then if you brake and lock the real wheel up for a slide, corner or for whatever reason, pull the clutch in. If you are going fast then start to brake the engine's revs will drop quite fast, you will need to hold clutch in and shift down. Then as you are slowing down to a casual stop, just pull clutch in and coast to a stop as you brake when needed.

If the real wheel isn't moving, the clutch should be in, or you should be in neutral. How to use the clutch in a motorbike?
you always use it when your

    taking off

    changing gears

    and sometimes when you brake..

but it depends on how hard and long your braking. and if your entering a corner and your at a pretty high rpm in a gear.. and you only have to slow down a little bit.. than dont even worry about the clutch.. and believe it or not.. on dirt bikes, you actually dont have to clutch when you down shift.. alot of people do anyways cuz they dont know.. so only when you come to a complete stop or pretty close to one..

it really depends on how well you know your bike.. and that will help you out a lot.

and there are a lot of times i use the clutch in corners so i can get the right amount of power.. i do the same in whoops or rollers..

Difficulty of replacing a head gasket on a chevy s10?

'95 S-10, 2.2 I4, 5 spd, 4x2 with NO AC. There is a small chance that my head gasket is leaking, I will be running the compression test tomorrow to find out for sure but was wondering how difficult is it for DIY and a few friends. I feel that once I remove the air intake assembly, radiator and all the belt accesories that it will be a straight forward job.I will have access to a warm garage with power tools for a week. looks like this is probably a steel or cast iron head so I think it would be a pretty straight forward job just remove everything and replace in the opposite order. once the head is removed though I would have it magnafluxed to make sure that it isn't cracked...it's not likely to be warped considering its not aluminum. check autozone.com for removal and installation procedure.Difficulty of replacing a head gasket on a chevy s10?
Head gaskets should only take about 10 hours for someone that hasn't done it before. Some things you should watch out for is exhaust bolts will be hard to get out and could brake, check the book to see if you have to loostened in a spacific order, the head bolts will also have to be tightened in a spacific order and torque. For the exhaust bolts get a can of BP blaster and spray it all over all of the bolts the night before and the bolts should come right out. Unless you blew the head gasket by overheating the motor the head should not need to be machined.Difficulty of replacing a head gasket on a chevy s10?

Can a missalignment of a timing belt cause these problems?

First off its an 89 isuzu trooper 4cyl that I bought for 500$. I havent had a chance to test the feul or compression yet but from what I can see there are no vaccume leeks.

When I bought it last summer the idle was rough and it lunged when going up hill. I changed the plugs and there was a improvement in acceleration when going up hill however it still idled rough. When I went to set the timing it would not improve no matter how much I tried to advance the timing in fact it seemed to run better when I retarded the timing.

The reason I think it was a timing belt job gone wrong is because the guy I bought it from was a ambitious back yard mechanic who would only do half the job, (ie changing the clutch but not the faulty throwout bearing).

Any info other then take it to a mechanic (there's no insurance on it right now) or buy a new car would be appreciated. Can a missalignment of a timing belt cause these problems?
Having the timing belt a tooth or two off in either direction will definately cause drivability issues. I would definately remove the upper cover and check that.

  • How can i check if my fan clutch has gone bad?

I replaced the fan clutch on my truck about a a year ago. Well now the truck seem to be having the same problems as id did before i changed the fan clutch. When i hit about 65 or so i try to git it gas and it seems like if i tapped the brake. Sometimes it also does it while at lower speeds. Like if i'm in second gear and i go to 3500 rpm it also seems like i looses power. So if anyone know how to check for a badd fan clutch please let me know. I know i can take it to a shop but i trying thing that are not going to cost me anything before i decide to take it in to be checked. So any help apresiated thanks. How can i check if my fan clutch has gone bad?
I really doubt your fan clutch would be causing you experience a noticable reduction of power... Sounds to me like something is out of wack internally in the engine.

If the fan clutch is actually bad, it will just stay engaged all the time but thats not going to cause you significant power losses...

If its stumbling when you hammer the gas, then its a spark/fuel mixture problem...

At least $400 on a FWD car. More if they resurface the flywheel. It's not hourly it's book rate. Hourly it'll take 3 hours give or take 30 minutes. They won't charge you on the hourly as I stated...book rate is standard for PITA jobs.Anyone know how many hours labor it should take to change a 04 Volkswagen GTI 1.8 turbo clutch?
I did mine in 4.5 hours by myself,

Be sure to get the upgrade to the g60 flywheel and the vr6 clutch :)

you can buy em at the link down bottom (good prices to, i love mine, had it on there for 42K and its still going strong with auto-x driving every weekend).

Also, be sure to get the timing belt done well before 65K, i would hate for you to suffer a catastrophic loss(the one downfall of the 1.8 is the timing belt system, or rather the plastic impeller on the water pump, so its best to do everything on the belt line, mjm also has a kit for that, get the one with the metal impeller, NOT the plastic one)

I did my timing belt in about 2 days working on it in little bits throughout the dayAnyone know how many hours labor it should take to change a 04 Volkswagen GTI 1.8 turbo clutch?
most shops charge for 6-8 hours, many do it quicker because it takes up bay space but will still charge you the 6-8hrs. anyone charging more then $350-400 for labor is robbing you

replace it all while your have the transmission out. including the slave cylinderCan i change the throw out Bering without replacing the clutch and pressure plate if there OK?
Yes, you CAN change the throw out bearing yourself without replacing the clutch disc or the pressure plate, yet I'd just go ahead and replace the lot were I you. Yet that's just me. To replace it, you'll need an engine hoist; an engine stand; a clutch kit spline shaft to replace the disc and plate later on; and a gallon of acetone cleaner to clean off the mating surfaces of the plate, disc and flywheel. Being that the engine isn't an in-line engine, it'll be easy to pull out yourself. Although, a friend or two never hurts. Get a Haynes manual to help you out if you've never done it before yourself. Can i change the throw out Bering without replacing the clutch and pressure plate if there OK?
you can but i don't recommend doing this, its always a good idea to change the whole thing when you got this apart, its a lot of trouble to have to go back in to it and change all that again,i wouldn't do it if it was my car, you,ll have to drop the transmission and all out,so it would be a good idea to do what all it needs at that time, good luck. Can i change the throw out Bering without replacing the clutch and pressure plate if there OK?
yes you can replace just the bearing, but you will have to take the transmission out and put it back in. If you don't know what you are doing, I would not try it. Take it to someone who can fix it right. Or you can make the problem worse. Can i change the throw out Bering without replacing the clutch and pressure plate if there OK?
yeah you can do it yourself but first get a manual and go over the procedure in it. study it for a day or two and make sure you have all the tools and parts, also leave plenty of time to do the job. if your clutch is still very strong and you don't ride the clutch pedal when you drive i wouldn't worry about changing that or the pressure plate. In order to change it though you'll need to drop the drive shaft, unbolt the transmission bolts from the the transmission to engine.

Good LuckCan i change the throw out Bering without replacing the clutch and pressure plate if there OK?
i have alot of experience with honda, if it's anything alike the bearing is completely separate from the clutch. The pressure plate and clutch disk is bolted to the engine side so you won't need to mess with that. The bearing will be pretty much self explanatory and easy to figure out by looking at it. But it definately sounds like the bearing, my honda did the same thing i replaced the bearing and it stopped.

I don't know how easy it will be, i never worked on many fords, but you will need to drain as much gear oil as you can before removing the transmission if it has a drain plug or else your gonna have a mess. And make sure to fill it back up with gear oil after you bolt it back on and before driving it. check your manual for the recommended gear oil. I suggest picking up a repair manual like haynes or something for your car, they explain alot of repairs and maintenance step by step and have diagrams. hope this helps.

Hard to shift to 2nd gear on motorbike?

    Hi

I have a honda CB250. I changed the clutch friction plates because the clutch was slipping and it was the right fix. However now when i ride it it is very hard to shift from 1st or neutral to 2nd gear. Once on 2nd gear it is easy to shift to the other gears. How do I make it easier to shift to 2nd gear from 1st???Hard to shift to 2nd gear on motorbike?
I'm afraid that your problem is linked to three possible causes: a bad shift detent spring or the shift fork for 2nd gear is bent, or possibly the shift shaft is bent. The detent spring is an easy fix, but in order to fix one of the other two possibilities, the cases will need to be opened up.Hard to shift to 2nd gear on motorbike?
While changing the clutch plates, the mechanic concentrates only on the plates BUT sometimes it is the peripheral assembly which is also just as important. You could try to blip the throttle just before the gear change. Or you could try to tighten the clutch cable just a little bit and see if there is any improvement. If not, you may have to open the clutch case for a closer inspection.Hard to shift to 2nd gear on motorbike?
if the bike you own has a adjustable clutch you may need to adjust it also lube the shifter pointsHard to shift to 2nd gear on motorbike?
You may have a bent shifting fork in your transmission.

  • Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?

When I push the clutch peddle down to change gear, the car squeals fairly loudly. It does this when it's moving and when stationary.

There's a hint of a squeal in neutral too (but not as loud)

    It's an 1998 Peugeot 306 that's done around 89000

What could it be and how long have I got before it explodes?! I can't get to the garage for 2 weeks because work is being **** about time off.

Thanks in advance! Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
Sounds like the clutch thrust bearing (what the Americans call a throw-out bearing). If it is, it will entail the gearbox being taken down and you may as well ask them to look at the rest of your clutch while they're at it, and replace anything else that's getting remotely worn. Clutch parts are relatively cheap, the biggest cost is the labour for pulling it apart and reassembling it, so you might as well get your money's worth.

It can go on for quite while like that, on occasions though that %26quot;while%26quot; can be short. Keep everything crossed. I did, years ago when money was short, struggle on with a near-seized thrust bearing for some months once . . .Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
Could be the thrust bearing has worn, might as well have the clutch done at the same time if you can it will be cheaper in the end.Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
yes,,its the throw out [clutch release] bearing...whatever we all call it its a 30 dollar bearing that costs hundreds to replace because the tranny has to come out,,,soooo while ur at it,,,replace whole clutch...thats the facts jack! Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
tht and check your belt for cracks and slippage SLIPPINGWhy does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
as for WENDEL HOMES you can not just change the thrust bearing as no1 sells thrust bearings and you will have to get a new clutch full stop!

even if you could buy them no mechanic is going to take the gear box off the car then chuck a thrust bearing in then re assemble to find the pressure plates have worn days later!

THE PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR IS THE CREASE LUBRICATION IN THE THRUST BEARING HAS DRIED UP OR THE PRSSURE PLATES ARE WORN SO WHEN THE BEARING SITS ON THE CLUTCH PLATE OR MAKES CONTACT IT'S METAL AGAINST METAL GRINDING MAKING THE NOISE YOU DESCRIBED AND YOU WILL NEED A CLUTCH WICH FOR A 1.4 PUG IS USUALLY FROM 拢30 TO 拢90ISH LABOUR MAYBE ABOUT 拢100... SAY 拢150 ALL IN...

AND AS PROOF HERE IS A CLUTCH TO FIT THE BILL%26gt; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PEUGEOT-306-1.4-CLWhy does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
It is the trow out bearing creating that noise. So either listen to it till it goes out or take it into the shop and get it replaced. I would suggest you get the clutch done while the mechanic is in there. Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
sounds like the throwout bearing or the pivot arm the pedal rides on.

What is going on with his NVQ L3 Mechanics course?

my younger brother who is 20 has been employed by Perrys for since the start of his apprenticship. He has finished Level 1 and 2 and is now on 3 BUT throughout his training two of the training providers have gone bust and now the one he is under havent visited him on site for 6 months! His employer has not given him the opportunity to develop his mechanics skills and he has been there nearly 3 years now. he has not been taught how to change a clutch or an engine!!! the poor lad has now been taken out of the body shop/garage and put on driving/delivery duties.

Poor lad has worked his socks off for 3 years solid, hasnt had a pay rise in this time (do apprentices geet rises?) and doesnt know wether he will eventually complete the nvq 3.

where does he start to complain? he is looking for other jobs not in this field as he isnt getting anywhere but i dont think he should give up so easily, i want to help him complain, i've searched for the minimum national standards employees have to meet for training apprentices but cant find a thing.

1980 old tornoado starts than stops unless giving gas but then sometimes starts?

ok so my fiances 1980 olds tornoado has been thru a lot we just bought for his birthday abou a month ago and it ran for the first week we had it. it turned out that the starter was bad s we put in a new one and the ground wire was corrded or how ever you spell it and we change the battery to a new one the altenator is good we changed the clutch fan and flushed the raidater and all was good. so for the first time in a few weeks we drove it a mile down the street it sounds great it ran smooth then right when we pulled into the gas station it jsut died but it started back up than it cut off right when he switched the gears and then it started again we got it to the pump put gas in thinkin it was because it had low fuel than we drove off and at the light it started to die down but my bf pumped the gas to keep it going we made it about another mile up the street and as it ran it ran smooth but once we got to the driveway it would turn over and then die down...but later that night when the car was cool it would start right up and be fine but we didnt drive it cause we didnt wanna take the chance of it dying in the road on us so i called the guy that has been workin on the car and he told me to get the in line fuel filter and the fuel filter to the carb could this be my problem or is there other things i can look into1980 old tornoado starts than stops unless giving gas but then sometimes starts?
put a new fuel filter on it and some fresh gas and run it for awhile and it probably will straighten out, might have gotten some junk off the bottom of the tank when the gas was low, also a good idea to get some gumout carb cleaner spray and while the engine is running spray into the carb while giving it some acceleration to blow any dirt out.1980 old tornoado starts than stops unless giving gas but then sometimes starts?
sounds like your car was overheating and the fuel lines are bad. check the fuel pump and filter too1980 old tornoado starts than stops unless giving gas but then sometimes starts?
Sounds as though you sucked up all the crud on the bottom of the tank . Could be just the fuel filter clogged not letting the fuel run freely . Check out the fuel system1980 old tornoado starts than stops unless giving gas but then sometimes starts?
Drop and clean the fuel tank. REplace the carb filter. Use Amsoil FOaming CLeaner to retore the carburettor. This stuff rebuilds the carb AS YOU WATCH. Follow with Gum-out spray. Check for leaks from PCV valve to carburettor base plate. The idling system is UNDER the carburettor. After all these years it is probably loaded with carbon. Once your choke plate moves all the way down, the idling system tries to stabilize with the dirty idling screws in base plate. The cleaners I have listed will remove ALL These deposits. Good luck!!1980 old tornoado starts than stops unless giving gas but then sometimes starts?
    Inline Filter and the One at Carb,It will be at the place Fuel Line connects;

The Mechanic gave You good advice--Cost of these two Filters less tha 10 Dollars and 45 Min; work;1980 old tornoado starts than stops unless giving gas but then sometimes starts?
did you change the fuel filter ? it might be clogging up.

Im asking because my Transmission with the No Reverse... in debating whether to just %26quot;Install the Other One%26quot; OR Change the Filter and Fluid in the one thats in there, THEN try Flushing on the NEW Filter if THAT doesnt work (Im having a Pro deal with the gaskets, the A.T. Im also thinking of leaving the Torque COnverter alone, as someone said %26quot;If it goes faster than 45MPH your Torque Converter is Fine%26quot;... so THAT shouldnt be the reason I dont have Reverse then.

As far as Clutch Packs and things.. is it -Possible- to just change One Clutch Pack, IF thats the case? Im -agonizing- as to whether changing the FLuid and Filter (people say clogged filter CAN cause that, had 2 people one with a Cavalier say they put in NEW Fluid and it worked) will.. be worth doing.. that way, the trans i bought could be a Spare and maybe await a Rebuild..

    Worth buying 1997 gti golf?

I am thinking about buying a '97 gti golf with 150,000km asking price is $4,400 and comes with winter tires.

The timing belt has been changed but not the clutch.

    Minor rust, very clean.

I am wondering will I have to change the clutch anytime soon, and how much do you think it will cost?

I will try to offer something under $4,000 see as clutches usually need changing around 100,000km.

If I got the car for something around $3,800

...would it be worth it? seeing as the clutch needs to soon be changed.

And this is my first VW, and feedback on the car would be apreciated.

    Thanks...Worth buying 1997 gti golf?
yep I am geting a 98 gti 2.0 clutch are easy to do your self.Worth buying 1997 gti golf?
I wouldn't worry too much about the clutch as I would about the rest of the car. Is it the 2.0 or is it the VR6? Most of the car should be fine but if you want real performance I'd go with the VR6.

1982 yamaha 650 maxim safety switch, why did my bike freeze?

Hi I have been restoring a 1982 yamaha maxim xj650. I bought this bike last August. The guy I bought it from started it up for me, and it ran fine. The things that needed to be replaced were all cosmetic. I have finally got the bike were I wanted to be. I have put alot of time, elbow grease and money into this project.

This entire time that I have been restoring the bike it has been in neutral, which has made it easier for me to move around.

The very last thing that I had to purchase to get it on the road was a new clutch cable. I took the bike over to my step-fathers house so that he could change the clutch cable for me because I have never changed a clutch cable, and my step-father has built Harley's from the ground up.

After he changed the clutch cable, the bike froze up. Meaning I can't get it into neutral, and I can't start it. I can turn it on and all the lights come on, but when I push the start button, nothing happens. Also when I pull the clutch in the bike won't go in or out of any gears, as if the transmission froze up.

My step-father thinks that it has something to do with the sidestand safety switch, which Harley's don't have.

I have talked to a few mechanics, some of them say that they don't have safety switches, funny I can look right at it, and others are just confused and don't have any suggestions with out me taking my bike in for them to look at. Needless to say I can't get it into neutral and it weighs 800 pounds.

I heard there is a way to bypass this switch.

Anyone know anything, or have any suggetions?? And if there is a way to bypass this switch could you give me a detailed description on how tyo do it??

Thank you so much!!1982 yamaha 650 maxim safety switch, why did my bike freeze?
I think the cable is too tight. If he didn't open the trans nothing changed.Did you ride the bike or try shifting ? No, you got took but the safety switch is not at fault for shifting, it's electrical and mounted on the rear of the kickstand . Take it off, spray with WD40 and push the plunger several times turn it plunger up and remount. I've done it.It's amazing how many early 80s Yamaha's have ? today' good luck checking the trans. And your bike only weighs 450 so check the tire pressure low tires really drag.1982 yamaha 650 maxim safety switch, why did my bike freeze?
You don't need to use the clutch in order to shift gears.

You should be able to shift gears with the engine not running, by just rocking the bike forward and back while moving the shift lever.

Check and make sure the engine isn't locked up.

Remove the left crankcase cover and turn the crankshaft with a wrench.

If it won't turn, you've got major engine problems.1982 yamaha 650 maxim safety switch, why did my bike freeze?
if you can,t get it in our out off any gear then the cluctch cable is out of adjustment ..continue to adjust and shorten the stroke till it will shift..And the safety switch will only affect the starting if the kickstand is down

    92 ford probe 3L V6 5 speed?

I know they have books, but I need a website that will tell me in detail how to change the clutch. I know I could have someone do it for me, but I would rather do it myself to learn.. What can I say Im an independent woman!!!92 ford probe 3L V6 5 speed?
Check out autozone.com. They have free repair manuals online for older vehicles.92 ford probe 3L V6 5 speed?
Unless you are willing to pay for the service I don't know of any. Auto-zone used to have manuals on line if you are a registered customer, but I think that they discontinued the service. They now link you to all data pro.

Some times you can find a manual on CD on e-bay, or pay for to down load a manual from a site.

Then there is the public library, sometimes they have lender copies and other times the manuals are in the reference section and can not be checked out.

You can look for Ford Probe forums, sometimes the info you want can be found there.

But unless you are willing to pay the equivalent price for tools as what the labor will cost and have a place to store them (things like a engine hoist), just have some one else do this.

Also plan on the job taking you at least a few days, where a good shop can turn it around in a day.92 ford probe 3L V6 5 speed?
    It's not really a Ford.

It was made by Mazda 100%.

    Fords little secrete.

    But still a cool car.

I'm glad Mazda made it and not ford.

All I can say is search for that car in forum clubs.

    But you still need manuals.

Or just do it like we used to.

Just start taking fasteners off until it falls free.

Take video, pictures of your progress,

then you make the manual for everyone else.

    96 Prelude throwout bearing.?

Hello, i have a 96 prelude and a few months ago my clutch went out. So i had to buy a new one. Now, my car is making a squealingish sound when i fully let out on the clutch.. someone told me it was the throwout bearing.. apparently the person that changed my clutch, didnt change that. so my question is, how hard is it to change the throwout bearing?96 Prelude throwout bearing.?
always remember when doing the whole clutch in manual transmissiong

    you need a new

    clutch disk

    pressure plate

    flywheel or resurface old one

    throwout bearing

    pilot bearing

    also check the fork

that squealing sound you hear during letting off the clutch is a throwout bearing to replace that you would have to remove the transmission off from the engine block again but you dont have to remove the clutch assembly

the fork holds the throwout bearing

once that throwout bearing is taking out see if it was a new one they installed or the old one

the bearings should always be greased before assembling it

    good luck

    Can't change gears?

    I'm driving a 1997 Geo Tracker.

When turned on, the gears won't change, even with clutch mashed all the way in. However, when turned off, the gears change fine even without mashing the clutch in.

It also does not feel like there is enough resistance on the clutch.

Any ideas on how to fix this?Can%26039;t change gears?
The Geo Tracker uses a Clutch cable so there will be NO Reservoir to check. The clutch cable is adjusted under the hood where it connects to the Trans-axle.

Your problem could be that the cable needs adjusting, the cable needs replacing or you need a clutch.Can%26039;t change gears?
u may need a new clutch, around 6-1000 dollars, but check your clutch resovoir to see if it is full, located near brake resovoir,u may just need fluid.it will take brake fluid alsoCan%26039;t change gears?
could be the clutch or even the throw out bearing if it is one of these two then i hope for you that it is the throw out bearing (alot cheaper to replace befor this happened was it making a squealing noise when you used theclutch if so then it is the throw out bearing but it could just be low or out of fluid some vehicles have a seperate reservoir for fluid and some use the master cylinder for the brakes and clutch both

    Knocking sound when cold?

Ok, so, car makes a sort of knocking or flapping sound in the front when i haven't warmed the car up. But is non existant when car is warm. Car is 22 yrs, takes bout five mins to warm from freezing start, some times won't roll over to start, just under 200 000 kms. Has just had cambelt change and clutch replaced. Any idea what could be the problem? Oh also, rust in doors, will/how much will fail its (nz wof) car roadworthy test?Knocking sound when cold?
Knocking or flapping sound could be the valve lifters, but there isn't enough info for us to make a decision. Please include the type of car, and whether it has hydraulic or solid lifters.Knocking sound when cold?
Also to add that a Water pump bearing will do that also.Knocking sound when cold?
The knocking noise comes from the engine because the valves need adjusting. Also go to a 10w30 oil for winter use. The oil will protect it in summer also.

As far as rust failing your car on the inspection, it's a judgement call at the inspection station

    Good LuckKnocking sound when cold?
Could be a main bearing or just simply an oil pressure problem. You might try going to a thinner oil as it will get through the motor faster and build pressure quicker. The oil pump may be failing or the oil pump screen could be clogged.Knocking sound when cold?
it,s probably the lifters not pumping up right away. rust in the doors? if it,s just surface rust sand it down and throw some primer on it. it will look better if you have some paint to put on it too.

I have a Honda Valkyrie and I need to change the fluid in the clutch. Can anyone tell me how ?

Bleed the clutch slave cylinder - the same as if you were bleeding the brakes.

Keep adding new brake fluid to the clutch master cylinder.

When new fluid comes out of the bleeder valve - fluid is changed.

Check the fluid level in the clutch MC one last time.

The clutch slave cylinder is on the clutch cover (rear of engine).

The bleeder valve sticks out to the right.I have a Honda Valkyrie and I need to change the fluid in the clutch. Can anyone tell me how ?
The bleeder sticks up in front of the cover that holds the seat lock. I use a MityVac.

    Mercury capri?

how difficult is it to change the clutch in a 1991 capri and what is the process?Mercury capri?
First off what a fun car to drive. I had one but it was a 93. Ok to the answer. Raise the car, remove the front wheels, remove cv axles, take out bolts securing transmission to engine, slide transmission away from engine, replace clutch pressure plate and throw out bearing and reassemble. May I suggest a repair manual that will help out with little hints and suggestions. Usually around $20 at your parts store. Also always replace the pressure plate and throw out bearing when you do the clutch because you already have them out. Also pick up a clutch alignment tool at your local parts store. This can be difficult. But with a manual and the right tools it is with in the skill limit of a lot of us.

The problem is that for a home mechanic, it will take about 2 days. The reason I say that is that the flywheel should be turned. Because we work at other jobs, we have to drop it off and pick it up later. It is true that it may not need to be turned, but I always have mine done. If I don't I might have to do it again in a year or less.

Check the Internet, there maybe some short cuts in how to do the job with out removing the engine and/or transmission to do the job.

I own a Miata which has a similar engine, and I replace the engine rear seal when doing this job.

    Gearbox Issue Saab 900S 1997?

My saab is having a problem shifting. Its extremly hard to get it into gear. Took it to the shop and they changed the clutch cable. It is still the same. I can hardly push it into gear its so hard.

How do I find out if this is the gearbox fluid? If it is the gearbox fluid how do I change? Has anyone else had the same problem? Where on the saab do I put this fluid? Have no clue don't want to go back to the shop since they charged me $200 and the car is the same.Gearbox Issue Saab 900S 1997?
Sounds like the clutch is going bad. I'm not sure about the gear lube used. But, you can remove the plug to check the level. First thing though, buy a repair manual at an auto parts store that is specific to your model. Good luck.

A few months ago we had to put it all the way to the floor to get it to shift, now after setting a few months it wo'nt release at all. seems like I need to adjust it so it pushes out farther. The clutch etc was changed out less than 5,000 miles ago.Can anyone tell me if and how to adjust the clutch pedal on a 1993 Grand Am. Thanks?
The clutch on a grand-am is a hydraulic clutch so that means it is self adjusting look under the hood for the resevoir and top it up it it needs it.if it's still full then it sounds to me like you have a problem with your clutch may have a leak somewhere on the line..when you put in the new clutch did you just replace the clutch plates or the slave cylinder also..have it checked.. there is no adjustable parts on this type of clutch because it does it all itself..so either the guy put it on wrong or you need to have it looked atCan anyone tell me if and how to adjust the clutch pedal on a 1993 Grand Am. Thanks?
I believe it is a hydraulic clutch. Check to make sure you have fluid in the master reservoir first...if not, fill it, bleed the slave cylinder first, check to find out where it leaked out at.

when no leaks, and the slave is pushing, the adjustment is the rod to the clutch release lever (adjustable rod), if it has one. If none, the clutch itself is worn too badly and will have to be replaced.

Fiesta revs when I press the clutch?

I've got a '98 Fiesta Ghia 1.3, took it from London to Devon and back yesterday, everything was going fine down to Devon but when I got in to Exeter the engine started reving when I pressed the clutch to change gear or stop. If I switched the engine off for a while and came back to the car it was fine for a while but then started it again. Thought it might be the accelerator cable sticking so put some WD40 on it but read somewhere that it might be the idle valve, if it is can anyone tell me where to find it and what needs adjusting or any other suggestions for what might be causing it and how I can fix it myself.Fiesta revs when I press the clutch?

My car is a 1995 eclipse gsx.. was completley stock with 123kmiles on body. now im putting in a motor came streight from japan my cousin sent it to me from there, its a 7 bolt it has 10 k miles, i just put in a fidanza flywheel 8lbs and a 2600 act clutch and pressure plate and bought new oem throw out bearing and every thing is bolted on and the tranny is already attatched to the block and every thing is connected, but my worries is the clutch fork.. i just found out that they need to be replaced wen i do a clutch change .... should i be worried? and how much would it be for a shop to doit,??

thank you very muchSwapping engine it in on my 1995 eclipse gsx..?
I never changed a clutch fork- never had problems with one- did numerous clutch replacements for hundreds of thousands of miles. If that's the same transmission, you have nothing to worry about. Maybe you could grease the pivot on the fork, but you'd have to take the tranny off the block to get in there. Leave it alone, it'll be good.Swapping engine it in on my 1995 eclipse gsx..?
im pretty sure it would do okay but then are you gonna be able to get to the clutch fork? if so, and if you wont change it too often, and you get it maybe changed WHEN you have the engine put in (if it aint already in there) then you should be fine.Swapping engine it in on my 1995 eclipse gsx..?
Didn't you ask this already? You should be fine. I've never heard of clutch forks being a problem on DSM's.

How long will it take to get used to driving controls in car when learning to drive?

Im on my third driving lesson now and im struggeling. Im finding it quite hard to remember the sequence in which you have to do everything (for example pressing the clutch before changing gear, finding the bite then change gear then parking brake etc etc...). Does this happen to everyone or am i just slow? How long did it take you until it became second nature? and will it come to a point when i can just do it without thinking? • Manuel car, powershifting?

i just wondering how to power shift in a manuel car, i guess the way i do it is called granny shifting

let off gas, clutch, change gear, little gas, no clutch

but if you ask me it doesn't seem that slowManuel car, powershifting?
    HI

what you are describing is not power shifting.... its syncro shifting. when you use NO clutch at all. and yes it is slow.. pull on shifter a little, let off gas shifter well come out of gear. while the motor is idling down you should be able to pull it into the next gear and so forth.

    POWER SHIFTING.

Is you plant the gas pedal on the floor and leave it there and you stomp the clutch (on and off as fast as you can) as you are pulling/push the shifter into the next gear. Yes it is hard on transmissions and clutches but that's racing. One bad thing is if you miss a shift be ready to lift off the gas right a way or you'll blow a motor.

    good luck

    timManuel car, powershifting?
If done correctly, it isn't %26quot;that slow%26quot; and your tranny and clutch will last a heck of a lot longer.Manuel car, powershifting?
That is for quarter mile racing. Floor the gas when it in first, keep it floored and quickly press clutch and shift letting go of the clutch as soon as you are in the next gear. It is really bad for the car though.Manuel car, powershifting?
always use the clutch unless you want to be driving the equivelent to a model %26quot;t%26quot; fordManuel car, powershifting?
true power shifting is you plant the throttle on the floor and keep it there while you %26quot;kick%26quot; the clutch and slam it into the next gear.. you only move the clutch enough were it will let the shifter slid out and into the next gear once you got that figured out you put a block of wood behind the clutch so it can only travel as far as it needs to go to disengage the clutchManuel car, powershifting?
Power shifting is simply shifting at close to red line without taking the foot off the gas.

    -rdsManuel car, powershifting?
%26quot;Power Shifting%26quot; isn't worth the massive amount of damage you'll eventually do to the car.

I call granny shifting really fast %26quot;street shifting%26quot; and It doesn't slow me down one bit. I used to drag race a lot, power shifting eventually made me shatter a driveshaft, rip an engine mount out, and break a timing chain all at the same time. It sucked.

If you really want to power shift just keep your right foot down and quickly grab that next gear. The slower your car, the smaller the chance of breaking something.Manuel car, powershifting?
Holding the pedal to the metal, [GAS} when you reach the desired shift point, hit the clutch and snatch to the next gear and off the clutch, pedal still to the metal.

I need help with purchasing a 2004 Impreza, please answer some questions.?

Im thining about buying a 2004 impreza, here are the specs:

    1. No liens on the car.

    2. 2nd owner at 106,000kms There was an under $5000, claim was under the amount where the details had to be given out.

    3. never raced the car.

    4. Canadian car, bought in Prince George

    5. No clutch change, no slip in the clutch. user was super easy on clutches

    6. The only issue: wheel bearing that was replaced by subaru under warranty.

    7. The paint isnt 100%. Being a northern car for most of its life the paint it a bit worn up front. Few tiny dings from poor parking lot care of other people.

I have a few questions to any impreza owners:

    1) when should the clutch most likely need a change?

    2) how much would a clutch and fly wheel change cost approx?

    3) What size tires does it take? and how much approximately would tires cost?

A clutch can last anywhere from 50,000 miles to well over 100,000 miles depending on how it was used. The base clutch change here in the US runs about $700. Tire size on those were 205/55/16 and decent ones in that size can be found here in the US for about 60 to 80 a piece. One hing to note. Fast wheel bearing wear can be caused by very aggressive driving or aftermarket wheels with too low an offset. So I doubt 3 is true. I mean it's the 2nd owner so how do they know?

    Help on driving manual/stick?

Hi all, I'm new at driving a stick. I don't know if this is of importance but I drive the 2010 Lancer. Several questions:

    1. When driving down a steep hill, would I need to change gears? (shift up) or can I leave it on neutral while my right foot is holding on the brake pedal?

    2. When would I know how to down shift gears? At what RPM? Or would I feel it?

    3. When shifting gears and my car is still running on the streets, is it necessary to press on the gas pedal after releasing the clutch? Or can you just press the clutch, change gear, and let go of the clutch WITHOUT having to press the gas?

    4. When is it necessary to press/hold on the clutch? I mean I know I need to press on the clutch before I change gears.. but I heard something about if you hold on the clutch too long, then it will mess up the engine. Wouldn't I need to hold on the clutch though say.. in times of slowing down at 5 mph before passing bump.

    Thanks!Help on driving manual/stick?
    1) You want to stay in a lower gear when going uphill. Like 2nd gear (or even stay in first).

    2) Anytime before the redline

    3) errrrr dont quite get your q. You dont have to floor it or anything.

    4) You can push the clutch in whenever you want and hold it (except if youre trying to go up a hill of course)..Help on driving manual/stick?
    1. neutral foot off clutch and foot on brake

    2. a lot is feel don't lug engine its very bad, i would say downshift somewhere round 2500-2000 rpm

    3. you dont have to press the gas, depends on situation

    4. the only way you can mess anything up is if you press the gas before the clutch pedal is fully released, and you wouldnt be messing up the engine youd be burning the clutch and having to replace it early. just remember clutch pedal and gas pedal at the same time is bad.Help on driving manual/stick?
    1. Downshift to one gear lower (5th to 4th) and use engine braking to keep your speed under control. You may have to downshift two gears (5th to 3rd) on steeper hills. Use brakes as needed. Shifting into neutral leaves you vulnerable to brake failure due to overheating.

    2. Experience and listen to engine sound. As a guide: If the engine RPM is below about 1,200 RPM, downshift into a lower gear. If the engine RPM is above 3000 RPM, upshift into a higher gear.

    3. You want to apply a little gas to try and match the engine speed to the speed the car is traveling. You are actually trying to match the flywheel speed of the engine with the speed of the clutch plate so that you don't jerk the car when you release the clutch. Again, that comes with experience.

    4. Only press the clutch when you want to shift gears or just before you come to a complete stop. You won't hurt the engine or clutch parts, don't worry. You can release the clutch pedal if the transmission is in neutral.

Additional: When you are slowing down, anticipate the stop early. Downshift one gear at at time as you approach your stop. This uses the engine compression as a brake and saves wear and tear on your brake components (shoes and pads and drums and rotors).

Emergency stop? Brake and clutch pedal at the same time. Don't worry about shifting gears.Help on driving manual/stick?
    1. You can downshift to a lower gear if you want to avoid using the brakes, or you can keep it in whatever gear you are in, or you can put it in neutral and let gravity pull the car along, and use the brakes to control speed.

    2. If you are driving with the engine below roughly 2000rpm (Unless it's a diesel), you should downshift if you need to accelerate or are on a hill. Maintaining a steady speed on flat ground should be fine though. It really just takes experience and familiarity with your car to know when the car is being lugged around or not, and is pretty much all feel and sound.

    3. Depends if you are up-shifting or downshifting. If you're downshifting, I would blip the gas a little bit while you have the clutch pedal pushed in, just enough to bring the RPM's up 800-1000 revs, that will make the downshift more smooth. If you're up-shifting, then you shouldn't have to hit the gas at all to change gears, but you don't want to let the revs slip to idle, because that will just make the car lurch when you let the clutch out.

    4. You never hold the clutch in for an extended period of time. This will wear out the clutch much faster, which is expensive to replace. If you are slowing down for a speed bump, put it in the gear you will need to be in to drive away from the bump. If you're stopping at a light, put it in neutral and brake. Then put it in first gear when the light turns green to take off. No matter what the situation, never, EVER, hold the clutch pedal down for more than a couple seconds. That can be the difference between a 40,000 mile clutch and a 140,000 mile clutch.Help on driving manual/stick?
    1. . Going down a steep hill (depends on how steep and how long the hill is), but NEVER put it into neutral and just coast down a hill. Leaving it in gear with the clutch engaged (out) lets the engine take some of the strain off the brakes.

    2. . Down shift (changing to a lower gear) at between 2000 amd 3500 RPM (depending on what engine you have), if you have a tachometer, if not then you will just have to learn the sound of the engine and estimate the RPM.

    3. . Yes, you can do that.

    4. . No, holding the clutch won't hurt the engine, but it will (eventually) wear the clutch bearings. And yes you could hold the clutch long enough to %26quot;coast%26quot; over a speed bump, but downshifting to 1st gear before you get to the bump would be better.

The only time you need to hold the clutch for longer than it takes to shift is sitting at a stop sign, or a traffic light.

And check your operator's manual for more vehicle specific information.

    =================================Help on driving manual/stick?
As a rule you should not coast in neutral or with the clutch depressed. Technically you are not in full control of your vehicle and in an emergency situation you would upset the balance of your car because of the lack of drive. When travelling down hill change down a gear and try not to sit on your brake but let the engine brake for you if you need to slow down use your brake.

When the engine is labouring such as going up a steep hill and the engine revs are dropping. You will feel it as you will start to lose speed and revs. Probably about 2000 revs.

It isn't necessary to use the accelerator when changing gears but it depends on the speed that you are going when you change. If you over rev the gear and then change up then you may not need to accelerate.

When you come to a stop at lights you will have the clutch fully depressed and sitting in first gear ready to take off. What you are talking about may be when you are on a hill and you have the clutch halfway out at the pivot point (where the clutch is in between being engaged and disengaged) this way you can keep your position without the use of the handbrake. This practise is ok to a point excessive acceleration when the clutch is at this point can burn it out because it is slipping causing friction and wear. If you can't go from clutch-in, brake-in to clutch-out, accelerator on without stalling it you should use your handbrake. With practise you can do it without the handbrake but is not essential. Do not sit at the lights in neutral, have it in gear ready to go. Also some people tend to 'ride' the clutch. This is where they don't take their foot fully off the clutch (you should take your foot right off the clutch and put it on the floor). This does not actually damage the clutch per se but can damage bearings. Don't coast over the speed hump but brake as you approach it, change down to second gear and let the car engine drive over it., You may need a little bit of accelerator but usually not. Brake before hitting the speed hump, don't brake going over it.

Does The Clutch DIsc Need To Be Fully Stopped To Change Gears?

Does the clutch disc need to be fully stopped, or just rotating under a certain speed to change gears? Also, how does a clutch disc stop so abruptly? Thanks in advance for the help.Does The Clutch DIsc Need To Be Fully Stopped To Change Gears?
The clutch doesnt particularly %26quot;stop%26quot; it disengages the engine drive from the gearbox and transmission.

Yes it does help to depress the clutch as this allows the synchro cones in the gearbox to match the speed of the gears so that they %26quot;mesh%26quot; without grinding.

Its doesn't really matter how far you press the clutch pedal,a short distance disengages the drive as much as a long press.

Actually,it is possible to change all gears up and down without the use of the clutch at all.In fact this was common in early motor vehicles.

There is however an amount of skill involved matching the engine speed to the required gear.Does The Clutch DIsc Need To Be Fully Stopped To Change Gears?
    no, it doesn't

you can shift gears in a moving vehicle without using the clutchDoes The Clutch DIsc Need To Be Fully Stopped To Change Gears?
No the clutch disengages and this releases the engine from the transmission. with the transmission disengaged from the engine it also releases the force on the collar, dog teeth, and the gears inside your transmission allowing you to pull it form one gear to another.Does The Clutch DIsc Need To Be Fully Stopped To Change Gears?
the clutch pressure plate as to open away from the clutch drive plate to change gear smoothly, the clutch doesn`t stop spinning, it is the pressure plate that lets clutch run free, they are attached to the fly wheel, and open when clutch pedal pressed in.

Get a maintenance manual, your tools and have fun.How important is a wheel bearing?
Yes you can do it. Yes you need a tool that will pack the new bearings with grease (easily and cheaply available at your local auto parts store). Yes you can mess it up. ;-) Just be careful not to over-tighten the nut that holds the bearing in.

Oh, and a wheel bearing is important. Actually, it's critical. I had one go bad and I kept driving on it (I was on a trip and in the middle of nowhere.). The wheel caught fire and burned the vehicle to the ground.

Fix it sooner rather than later though. A bad bearing can damage other components.

easier to put on a rebuilt (if that is all you can afford) better to put on a new one. you will need to evacuate the old freon, remove the old compressor, install the new compressor, add the proper amount of oil, evacuate the system again, keeping it in a vacuum for an hour, then re-charge with the proper type and amount of freon. How hard is it to change the a/c clutch assy. on a 94 Honda Civic and do I need to re-charge the system?
YES AND NO, YOU CAN DO THIS YOURSELF BUT YOU WILL NEED A LOT OF SPECIAL TOOLS AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RECHARGE THE SYSTEM.

YOU WILL NEED TIME AND PATIENCE HOWEVER.

AND NO TO JUST REPLACING THE COMPRESSOR BECAUSE YOU WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE RECEIVER DRIER AS WELL AND YOU WILL NOT KNOW HOW MUCH OIL IS ALREADY LEFT IN THE SYSTEM.

YOU MIGHT CAUSE A RESTRICTION IN THE SYSTEM BY ADDING TWO MUCH OIL.

My Ford Focus reverse gear sometimes get stuck and makes "Kkrrrrrr" noise,no matter how hard i push the clutch

its a %26quot;S%26quot; Reg , and it only makes that noise sometimes when i try to put it in reverse gear , what could be the reason ? and how much is it gonna cost me ? and can anyone tell me how much do they charge for changing gearbox and clutch plate including parts ????? what should i do ??My Ford Focus reverse gear sometimes get stuck and makes %26quot;Kkrrrrrr%26quot; noise,no matter how hard i push the clutch
i dont know about a focus, but in many manual transmissions the reverse gear isnt synchonized. it would be totally normal for it to grind a bit when putting it in reverse.

if it is unusually difficult to get it in gear you might have a problem with the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder not disengaging the clutch completely. if this is the case it will be difficult to put it in 1st gear at a stop as well. 1st gear probably wont grind, just tough to get in gear.My Ford Focus reverse gear sometimes get stuck and makes %26quot;Kkrrrrrr%26quot; noise,no matter how hard i push the clutch
Sounds like the syncro's, I would take it to a tranny shop and get an estimate

How long should it take to change an 89 Honda Accord clutch?

Im no mechanic but still know my way around a garage. I hear the sway bar drop is easier then going the ball joint way. Any info would be awsome. How long should it take to change an 89 Honda Accord clutch?
just cruisin along not trying to braek any records or parts its hard to say how long it'll take you. really depends on what kind of probs you run into if you run into any at all. I'm gonna say if your not done in 3 to 4 hours or if the finish line isnt at least in sight by then you may want to take a break and maybe invite a friend who you feel also knows his or her way around the garage and tool box to come over and help you wrap it up. just for the sake of two heads are better than one (usually). oh and about the torsion bar thing Please do your self a favor leave that thing alone. just remove the axels the way they were meant to be removed you'll and when you put the ball joint back together be sure to pay close attention to the flat side of the ball joint stud and make sure you line it up with the flat side of the hole. If it's set up like that and it gets overlooked it will go together without any notice-able problems, but later on will come apart while the vehicle is in motion trust me, not a pretty mess. But still its way more worth it than attempting to remove those axles without dropping the ball joint. Besides in order to r%26amp;r that trans you may ebd up with the torsion bar off anyway as well. If your find you have access Mitchell Manuals are very user friendly. and You could also call your locall mechanic and ask him what the Michell or Chilton book time is for R%26amp;R on that clutch. How long should it take to change an 89 Honda Accord clutch?
Maybe 2-4 hrs.Extra time to resurface flywheel or easier to replace it.How long should it take to change an 89 Honda Accord clutch?
About 4hrs to 5hrs at home no power tools and a couple of 12 packs later. How long should it take to change an 89 Honda Accord clutch?
You must look at a repair book, like a Chilton's....'cause you're getting into all kinds of strange territory with Honda's...and do you have metric tools? Have fun. Oh, have patience too.....like for a few days if you're going to spend 8 or more hours a day on this.....'cause you just %26quot;know you're way around the garage%26quot; huh? Well. An experienced Honda mechanic, trained, certified, could do it in 1 day. I'm a fulltime mechanic, but if someone came to me, I'd turn it down...I've got enough problems now. Like I said....have fun.
