Knocking sound when cold?

Ok, so, car makes a sort of knocking or flapping sound in the front when i haven't warmed the car up. But is non existant when car is warm. Car is 22 yrs, takes bout five mins to warm from freezing start, some times won't roll over to start, just under 200 000 kms. Has just had cambelt change and clutch replaced. Any idea what could be the problem? Oh also, rust in doors, will/how much will fail its (nz wof) car roadworthy test?Knocking sound when cold?
Knocking or flapping sound could be the valve lifters, but there isn't enough info for us to make a decision. Please include the type of car, and whether it has hydraulic or solid lifters.Knocking sound when cold?
Also to add that a Water pump bearing will do that also.Knocking sound when cold?
The knocking noise comes from the engine because the valves need adjusting. Also go to a 10w30 oil for winter use. The oil will protect it in summer also.

As far as rust failing your car on the inspection, it's a judgement call at the inspection station

Could be a main bearing or just simply an oil pressure problem. You might try going to a thinner oil as it will get through the motor faster and build pressure quicker. The oil pump may be failing or the oil pump screen could be clogged.Knocking sound when cold?
it,s probably the lifters not pumping up right away. rust in the doors? if it,s just surface rust sand it down and throw some primer on it. it will look better if you have some paint to put on it too.
