ok so my fiances 1980 olds tornoado has been thru a lot we just bought for his birthday abou a month ago and it ran for the first week we had it. it turned out that the starter was bad s we put in a new one and the ground wire was corrded or how ever you spell it and we change the battery to a new one the altenator is good we changed the clutch fan and flushed the raidater and all was good. so for the first time in a few weeks we drove it a mile down the street it sounds great it ran smooth then right when we pulled into the gas station it jsut died but it started back up than it cut off right when he switched the gears and then it started again we got it to the pump put gas in thinkin it was because it had low fuel than we drove off and at the light it started to die down but my bf pumped the gas to keep it going we made it about another mile up the street and as it ran it ran smooth but once we got to the driveway it would turn over and then die down...but later that night when the car was cool it would start right up and be fine but we didnt drive it cause we didnt wanna take the chance of it dying in the road on us so i called the guy that has been workin on the car and he told me to get the in line fuel filter and the fuel filter to the carb could this be my problem or is there other things i can look into1980 old tornoado starts than stops unless giving gas but then sometimes starts?
put a new fuel filter on it and some fresh gas and run it for awhile and it probably will straighten out, might have gotten some junk off the bottom of the tank when the gas was low, also a good idea to get some gumout carb cleaner spray and while the engine is running spray into the carb while giving it some acceleration to blow any dirt out.1980 old tornoado starts than stops unless giving gas but then sometimes starts?

Drop and clean the fuel tank. REplace the carb filter. Use Amsoil FOaming CLeaner to retore the carburettor. This stuff rebuilds the carb AS YOU WATCH. Follow with Gum-out spray. Check for leaks from PCV valve to carburettor base plate. The idling system is UNDER the carburettor. After all these years it is probably loaded with carbon. Once your choke plate moves all the way down, the idling system tries to stabilize with the dirty idling screws in base plate. The cleaners I have listed will remove ALL These deposits. did you change the fuel filter ? it might be clogging up.
