Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?

When I push the clutch peddle down to change gear, the car squeals fairly loudly. It does this when it's moving and when stationary.

There's a hint of a squeal in neutral too (but not as loud)

It's an 1998 Peugeot 306 that's done around 89000

What could it be and how long have I got before it explodes?! I can't get to the garage for 2 weeks because work is being **** about time off.

Thanks in advance! Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
Sounds like the clutch thrust bearing (what the Americans call a throw-out bearing). If it is, it will entail the gearbox being taken down and you may as well ask them to look at the rest of your clutch while they're at it, and replace anything else that's getting remotely worn. Clutch parts are relatively cheap, the biggest cost is the labour for pulling it apart and reassembling it, so you might as well get your money's worth.

It can go on for quite while like that, on occasions though that %26quot;while%26quot; can be short. Keep everything crossed. I did, years ago when money was short, struggle on with a near-seized thrust bearing for some months once . . .Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
Could be the thrust bearing has worn, might as well have the clutch done at the same time if you can it will be cheaper in the end.Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
yes,,its the throw out [clutch release] bearing...whatever we all call it its a 30 dollar bearing that costs hundreds to replace because the tranny has to come out,,,soooo while ur at it,,,replace whole clutch...thats the facts jack! Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
tht and check your belt for cracks and slippage SLIPPINGWhy does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
as for WENDEL HOMES you can not just change the thrust bearing as no1 sells thrust bearings and you will have to get a new clutch full stop!

even if you could buy them no mechanic is going to take the gear box off the car then chuck a thrust bearing in then re assemble to find the pressure plates have worn days later!

THE PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR IS THE CREASE LUBRICATION IN THE THRUST BEARING HAS DRIED UP OR THE PRSSURE PLATES ARE WORN SO WHEN THE BEARING SITS ON THE CLUTCH PLATE OR MAKES CONTACT IT'S METAL AGAINST METAL GRINDING MAKING THE NOISE YOU DESCRIBED AND YOU WILL NEED A CLUTCH WICH FOR A 1.4 PUG IS USUALLY FROM 拢30 TO 拢90ISH LABOUR MAYBE ABOUT 拢100... SAY 拢150 ALL IN...

AND AS PROOF HERE IS A CLUTCH TO FIT THE BILL%26gt; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PEUGEOT-306-1.4-CLWhy does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
It is the trow out bearing creating that noise. So either listen to it till it goes out or take it into the shop and get it replaced. I would suggest you get the clutch done while the mechanic is in there. Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
sounds like the throwout bearing or the pivot arm the pedal rides on.
